Location : dBs Bristol, United Kingdom Job AdvertCourse Leader Music & Sound for Film & Television / Sound DesignMain Purpose of the JobThe Course Leader’s main objective is to inspire students to engage proactively in their learning and to develop as both audio practitioners and employable professionals, sharing timely and relevant feedback with them on their progress. Lecturers in the Bristol faculty aim to provide a relevant link for students between knowledge and current industry practice, fostering a culture of questioning, reflection and evaluation. The Course Leader aims to ensure this through excellent course management, administration, teaching and tutorial guidance, curriculum development, and campus-related activities.Our Music and Sound for Film and TV and Sound Design courses provide students with an opportunity to explore and develop a diverse range of skills that are in high demand in the related industries. Critically exploring approaches to composition and sound design using digital audio workstations, delving into the creative techniques used to sculpt their own sonic signature, they work within our professional recording studio complex and learn about object-based audio, surround sound, creative coding, middleware integration and Dolby Atmos. With a heavy focus on the industry and plenty of real-world opportunities, they study and practice the process of orchestration and post-production including location recording, ADR, mixing, and more. Students are given a significant insight into a wide variety of techniques and methodologies and encouraged to incorporate them into their practice or modify and develop their new methodologies.Key Tasks and ResponsibilitiesTo take responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the degree coursesTo ensure that the delivery of subject modules is consistent with the content of the course as validatedTo deliver modules on the courses at dBs Institute as agreed with the Senior Leadership TeamTo arrange and chair regular minuted meetings with the subject specialist staff who are responsible for teaching on the Music and Sound for Film and TV and Sound Design coursesThe preparation and distribution to students of up-to-date Module Guides and to update the relevant sections of the Course Handbook each year. The ‘GDrive’ Module Guides must follow the standardised dBs Institute format.To take primary responsibility for producing marks information for Award BoardsTo arrange for students to receive study support and other non-academic support and adviceTo arrange for students to receive career adviceTo take primary responsibility for the student timetable and room bookings, working with the relevant teamsTo seek advice from dBs Institute and Partner University Management about any proposed changes in assessment patterns, modules or subject rulesTo be responsible for a range of delegated curriculum quality activities, including the supporting of the relevant staff with validations and periodic reviewsTo assist the relevant staff with professional body accreditations and preparations for external quality inspections and reviewsTo counsel subject students on their choice of modules, including exchange courses, and to liaise with relevant staff on subject changesTo receive and, where appropriate, action upon student reports and letters from student servicesTo assist in the marketing and recruitment to the coursesTo advise and liaise with the Admissions Team on student applications including the consideration of applications with a transfer of creditTo provide pastoral care to students, making sure issues of a more personal nature are reported and acted upon in good time. This includes:Working closely with students to ensure they are supported throughout the coursesBeing available out of session time to field questions about the coursesLiaising with and managing Module Leaders to ensure support for students is maximisedRaising any concerns or worries about students with relevant staffAbout YouEssential

  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. music production, sound engineering, music composition, sound design, music business, game art, games design).
  • Higher education teaching qualification or professional recognition (e.g. PGCert, FHEA or equivalent).
  • Experience of lecturing and course leadership within a higher education setting, with a demonstrated track record of success.
  • Experience within a related industry (e.g. film, TV, games).
  • Experience of engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, including applicants, students, staff, industry partners, alumni, and the wider community.

Desirable

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline
  • A portfolio of published research.
  • Experience of curriculum development and implementing quality assurance and enhancement processes.
