Main purpose of job:
The Ambassador’s Residence in Montevideo supports the work of The British Embassy, foreign policy objectives and UK interests. This includes events and diplomatic entertainment, to build and maintain a network of senior and influential contacts, hospitality to promote British business interests, accommodation for official visitors, and meetings, training and other events. The Residence is also the home of the Ambassador and family. It is essential that the Residence is well run to support all these activities, projecting a positive image of the UK, and demonstrating high standards, excellent service and value for money. The jobholder will work closely with the Ambassador, the Ambassador’s spouse, Embassy staff, and will manage the Residence team.
Roles and responsibilities:
This list is not exhaustive and is subject to modifications:
- Lead a team of Residence staff to ensure that our guest experience is consistently outstanding. That the team are delivering; motivated and appropriately rostered and that the needs of the Ambassador and their family are respected and met. Conduct performance assessments and ensure appropriate training is offered.
- Ensure arrangements for all official events (breakfast, lunches, dinners, receptions, meetings, training etc.) and accommodation at the Residence provides the highest levels of service at all times. The Residence Manager will work closely with the Ambassador, the Ambassador’s spouse or partner, Events Manager, Embassy colleagues, other Residence staff, external suppliers, and any additional casual staff required.
- Events: work closely with the Event manager to co-ordinate all aspects of an event based on the brief.
- Co-ordinate menus with Residence Chef according to the event, ensuring value for money;
- Co-ordinate purchase of supplies and organise effective storage of goods according to FCO procurement guidance;
- Budgets and Stock Control: profile and reconcile the Residence budget for events. Manage stock levels.
- Income Generation: manage contracts and act as liaison between client & Embassy Finance Section to ensure due payment.
- Ensure the Residence complies with UK Health & Safety standards, including drills and checks through the PCA (Property Compliance Assessment) Register.
- Work with Corporate Services department to oversee day-to-day maintenance of the building and its grounds, project-managing large-scale construction projects as and when required.

- Demonstrable experience of customer liaison and staff management within the service industry or similar.
- Advanced English and Spanish.
- Experience in project and budget management.
- Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
- Experience of working well within a team

Working patterns:
As with all hospitality roles, whilst we seek to enable the jobholder to work 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday, the successful applicant should be willing to work different hours, possibly starting earlier or finishing later and regularly attending evening or weekend events as required.
Learning and development opportunities:
Training will be given on in-house computer system.
L&D opportunities include attendance at regional conference, personnel management, risk management and health and safety.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
