Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy, Panama City is looking to recruit a motivated intern with good written, analytical and creative skills who works well independently. The successful candidate will work closely with and report to the Political and Communications Team. The successful applicant will conduct research in support of the Embassy’s strategic and policy work, providing analysis to the Political section, Global Issues section and the wider embassy. In the Communications Section, the Intern will assist in the brainstorming of ideas and the production of social media content. Beyond this, the position will offer a wide-ranging insight into embassy’s work. A high-performing candidate will have opportunities support to the embassy across a range of foreign policy issues. This role involves a mix of analytical, administrative, and creative tasks.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Conduct research, report, briefings on issues of interest to the British government including: domestic politics, human rights, foreign policy, and other topics as assigned.
- Attend events relevant to the Political section’s work, e.g. at National Assembly, universities, government agencies, international affairs organisations, etc.
- Write summaries of internal and external meetings
- Support the organisation of and participate in events hosted by the Embassy.
- Produce social media content (e.g. filming at locations, assisting with lights, sound and video equipment)
- Create communications strategies for different yearly campaigns.
- Cover embassy events (e.g. taking photos and videos, social media coverage, interacting with press)
- Design graphics and edit video content for publication.

- Intermediate graphic design (e.g. Canva) and video editing/shooting skills (e.g. Capcut, Instagram Reels, TikTok)

The successful candidate must be Panamanian, or have a valid and current Work Permit through Ministry of Labour, and be able to provide it when requested by Embassy. The British Embassy – Panama City does not sponsor work permits.
Please note that all applicants must be fluent in both English and Spanish.
Office hours in the embassy are 8am-5pm Monday to Thursday and 8am-1pm on Fridays, though there is scope for flexible working arrangements, which can be agreed with the Line Manager. This job involves flexible working, sometimes working late nights due to official events and networking receptions, prior discussion with Line Manager.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
