Job Title: PhD Graduate – Nuclear AnalystSalary: £37,000 per annum plus £2,000 Joining Bonus.Location: This role could be based at our Gloucester, Bristol or Plymouth offices.Working Pattern: We operate a hybrid working policy with time spent at our office/home/client site.Closing date for this role is 17th May but we would encourage early applications.PostDoc or Industry?Finishing a Doctorate is a big deal. This gives you the comfort of commencing a new career, financial stability and importantly the bandwidth to enable you to finish your write up.Nuclear Technology AnalystOur Nuclear Technology team provide technical analysis services to the current and next generation of nuclear reactors, fusion reactors, and the wider energy industry. We help our customers understand physical systems through data investigations and modelling, and work with them to resolve their operational problems, optimise the design of new systems, and demonstrate that safe operation will be achieved.We are looking for PhD Graduates with a keen interest in the nuclear fission, fusion and the wider energy industry to join our team as we grow to meet the future energy industry demands. We are particularly interested in candidates who have developed and applied analytical techniques, simulation tools and cutting-edge data science practices to understand physical phenomena directly relevant to the nuclear industry as part of their research.Joining our team as a Nuclear Technology Analyst you will be well supported in:

  • Developing skills to communicate with our customers, understand their requirements, and produce plans to deliver their desired outcomes.
  • Applying and expanding your analysis, simulation and data science skills and technical knowledge to understand the performance of real engineering systems.
  • Communicating complex concepts and results to our customers in a way that can be readily understood.

  • Develop skills in management of all aspects of technical projects, including client communication, project delivery and managing other project staff.

Our projects are very diverse and can last from a few weeks to many years of sustained support. Typically, our people are involved in multiple projects at any one time giving a good variety of work.Technical disciplines applied in the team include neutronics and core physics, data science, statistical analysis, materials science, thermal modelling, fluids mechanics, support to structural assessment and safety case authoring. However, we are always looking to strengthen and diversify our capabilities and you will have the opportunity to help shape our future skills and services.RequirementsThe successful applicant will meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Specialist knowledge in performing analysis, simulation, or data science practices relevant to the nuclear industry, gained through a PhD, DPhil or EngD.
  • An aptitude to develop further skills in applying analysis, simulation and data interpretation techniques to engineering problems, varying from performing hand calculations to developing complex simulation / analytical models or the statistical analysis of data.
  • Have an interest in and an understanding of the nuclear fission, fusion and/or the wider energy industry.
  • Be a strong team player but with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills.

It is to your advantage if you meet any or all the following additional requirements:

  • Experience in delivery of analysis to support the nuclear or wider energy industry.
  • Experience in the interpretation and analysis of large or complex data sets, including statistical and uncertainty analysis.
  • Experience of coding using python, MATLAB or other relevant software languages to support or optimise analysis or simulation.
  • Experience in writing proposals, client liaison and business development
  • Have, or working towards, Chartered Engineer status
