Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

UN WOMEN West & Central Africa Regional Office has been supporting multi-initiatives through programming, global advocacy and building strategic partners with national governments, civil society, UN agencies and other bilateral and multi-lateral development organizations. EVAW Regional unit supports several initiatives at regional, at country levels and intends to document good or emerging practices which emerge from UNWomen’s interventions.

Under the direct supervision of the EVAW Regional policy specialist, the consultant will collaborate closely with the Regional, and Country Offices’ (RO/ /CO) colleagues to document good or emerging practices which emerge from UNWomen’s interventions.

Duties and Responsibilities

The overall objective of the mission is to document good practices and lessons learned with a focus on gender equality and women’s empowerment approaches in the projects implemented under Ending violence against women and girl’s portfolio.

The consultant will be required to produce six (6) documents presenting successes and lessons learned/good practices, illustrated with achievements, including induced changes for women and girls. The good practices and lessons will focus beyond the results on:

  1. The Involvement of Traditional, Religious and Cultural Leaders in Changing Social Norms
  2. Preventing GBV through Economic Empowerment
  3. Mobilizing women’s rights organizations

Methodology

The Consultant will conduct the activities according to the methodology described below.

  • Preliminary phase: production of documents per themes, data collection; analysis and writing of documents.
  • Organization/facilitation of a virtual validation workshop by EVAW community of practice
  • Production of final Documents

1 6 capitalization documents that present successes and lessons learned/good practices, illustrated with achievements, including induced changes for women and girls : not exceeding 10 pages pages, including the cover page, reference pages (tables of contents/summaries, abbreviations), illustrated with photos of the achievements and stories/testimonies of the communities; Written and formatted in two (02) languages: French and English high-resolution photos of the achievements including the contributions of the various stakeholders (partners and local authorities); 15 days per document (collection, analysis, writing, input integration, finalization, formatting, follow-up, online and hard version)

Consultant’s Workplace and Official Travel

This is an office-based consultancy.

As part of this assignment, there will be a maximum of 10 trips out of the duty location.

FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and French, with an excellent understanding of structure and form of official UN documentation.
  • Excellent organizational skills and proven ability to deliver projects within assigned deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and objectivity.

  • In-depth substantive knowledge of Knowledge Management and Development Policy issues, particularly in gender equality and ending violence against women.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

  • Graduate degree in social sciences, sociology, public health, or any other equivalent field
  • Excellent knowledge of the socio-economic and cultural context of West and Central Africa

Experience:

  • At least five years of relevant experience in capitalizing on development projects and conducting experience-sharing workshops in the field of ending violence against women.
  • Excellent command and proven experience in gender analysis, excellent ability to integrate gender issues into the planning, implementation and analysis of results achieved.
  • Proven work experience on VAW projects and programs
  • Previous work experience in the countries where the project is involved.
  • Excellent analytical, synthesis and writing skills in French and English
  • Excellent command of computer tools and Office suite
  • Autonomy, ability to work in a team, flexibility, initiative, leadership, ability to multi-task, ability to lead teams.
  • Ability to adapt to a multicultural work environment, demonstrated skills in considering cultural diversity.
  • Ability to work under pressure, sense of rigor and respect for deadlines.

Languages:

  • Fluency in French and English is required.
