A key member of our diverse and inclusive technical team of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southampton, you will be working at the forefront of fundamental Physics research and teaching at one of the UK’s top Universities.As a member of the workshop team, you’ll be responsible for the supervision of academics, postdoctoral students and technical staff during their visit to the Student Mechanical Workshop. You will create, deliver and develop engineering workshop courses to student workshop users in design, engineering principles and manufacture.You will also work closely with the workshop team, when needed, in the design, manufacture and commissioning of high quality bespoke experimental equipment for use within our research and teaching laboratories and wider University community.To be successful you will have experience of.
- Working to high precision using conventional engineering machine tools including but not limited to, Mills, Lathes, Drills and hand tools.
- Working in a supervisory role, training and tutoring non-engineering individuals in the use of engineering equipment & techniques.
- Engineering materials, processes and techniques to design and manufacture high quality precision parts within tight tolerances.
- CAD software to produce 3D models, presentations and drawings.
- Knowledge of CAM software and CNC machine tools.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills to work in a small workshop team and able to discuss and explain engineering design concepts and manufacturing processes to customers and non-engineering end users.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate a skill level equivalent to Level 6 (Degree) of the in engineering. Although applications are encouraged from those qualified to degree level, we really do want to hear from individuals who have an equivalent skill level in mechanical engineering, along with other applicable recognised qualifications.
