Is responsible for the safe, efficient and reliable operation/maintenance of all equipment in the central heating plant, three central refrigeration units and auxiliary equipment at the Victoria General Hospital site, also for the supply of steam to APSEA and the IWK Children’s hospital.Responsibility for assigned building mechanical systems such as chilled and hydronic systems, chemical treatment programs, steam distribution and condensate collection, steam traps and monitoring the heating and air conditioning equipment via the building management control system.The Chief Power Engineer must also liaise, communicate and work with the other trades onsite supervisors to complete repairs, equipment replacement and upgrades, problem solving and mutual assistance as required.Due to the nature of this position the Chief Power Engineer is responsible under the Technical Safety Act of Nova Scotia, Power Engineers Act and Regulations to respond 24/7 to any critical operational issues in the Power plant. Therefore this puts the Chief Power Engineer in a position where they must adhere to the Technical Safety Act Power, Engineers Act and Regulations.This position consistently requires the Chief Power Engineer to balance the needs and wants of the NS Health authority with the legal requirements under the Boiler & Pressure equipment regulations regarding the operation, maintenance & repair of boilers, pressure vessels, high pressure piping systems and refrigeration plants.About YouWe would love to hear from you if you have the following:Mandatory Certification: Licensed Inter – Provincial First Class Power Engineer * Operation, maintenance and repairs of boilers, generators, pumps, controls and other auxiliary equipment. Staff scheduling, supervisor skills, project planning and supervision of equipment repairs and projects. Experience in budgeting, safety and dealing with Provincial and National regulatory requirements for Power Engineers and pressure equipment. Knowledge of collective agreements and working in a unionized environment.

  • Knowledge in use of data collection and reporting systems and other related Preventive Maintenance software programs. Must have well developed computer skills and be proficient in Microsoft word and excel programs.
  • The ability to identify equipment faults and find or develop solutions that maintain the safe and continuous operation of critical hospital systems.
  • Must be prepared to describe power plant procedures and collection of data used in the steam billing process for external customers to consultants, finance, customer representatives and senior management.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
