Located on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in South Oxfordshire, we enable cutting edge research across a broad range of scientific disciplines and industrial applications.About the RoleThe I15-1 XPDF beamline at Diamond Light Source is a highly successful, dedicated X-ray Pair Distribution Function instrument. This beamline performs experiments to study the local structure of materials from a vast range of scientific fields such as catalysis, energy materials, and pharmaceuticals. I15-1 is concluding a major upgrade with a high-throughput robotic sample changer and a bespoke optimised “ARC” detector. The ARC detector, which is currently undergoing commissioning, will open exciting new opportunities in the field of local structure analysis.We are seeking a Principal Beamline Scientist to direct the operation of and lead the experimental team at beamline I15-1.About youYou must have an appropriate first degree or equivalent qualification. A second degree in an appropriate subject, and have a PhD in a relevant science area, along with significant post-doctoral experience using X-ray diffraction for total scattering studies at a large-scale facility.You will have:

  • An active research program in a field relevant to I15-1 and be able to contribute to research publications and have international recognition for your work.
  • A proven track record of research in the appropriate field of synchrotron radiation science related to the beamline.
  • Beamline instrumentation and optics experience along with commissioning and operation of a beamline.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Experience of motivating and managing a small team.

You will also be able to demonstrate expertise in science and technical areas relevant to the beamline, specifically high energy total scattering and pair distribution function analysis. This should include data collection, reduction, and analysis strategies and familiarity with relevant software packages.BenefitsDiamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance.
