The Organisation:The Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) works to develop and deploy advanced technology in pursuit of solving some of humanity’s most challenging and enduring problems. Guided by world-leading scientists and entrepreneurs, EIT seeks to accelerate innovation by driving scientific and technological advancements across four humane endeavours: health and medical science, food security and sustainable agriculture, climate change and clean energy, and government innovation and the era of artificial intelligence.EIT Oxford is a new interdisciplinary research and development facility that bridges The Oxford Science Park and Littlemore. Join us in our journey as we unlock the potential of AI to create a better future.The Role:The Head of AI Impact is a pivotal Leadership role responsible for formulating and executing a strategic vision for the transformative application of AI and ML technologies to drive the impact of the EIT’s missions.This role involved overseeing the scoping, extension and evaluation of AI projects, building and leaing a world class team and advocating for the profound impact of AI within and outside the Institute. The ideal candidate will have a strong blend of strategic insight, technical acumen and leadership skills to guide the EIT in harnessing AI’s potential to achieve mission-driven objectives.Duties/Responsibilities:Key Responsibilities:Deliver Impact to EIT Missions

  • Strategic Development and Implementation: Develop and implement a bold, visionary strategy for applying AI and ML to significantly enhance the impact of EIT’s missions. This includes identifying opportunities where AI can drive transformative change and setting clear goals and milestones for achieving these outcomes.
  • Collaborative Project Management: Lead the collaborative scoping and delivery of AI projects that align with mission objectives, ensuring that projects deliver agreed value and impact. Work with diverse teams across the organisation to harness a wide range of skills and perspectives, fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity.
  • Performance Monitoring and Optimisation: Establish and maintain robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the performance and impact of AI and ML models. Continuously optimise these models to improve their effectiveness and ensure they contribute to mission success.

Build & Lead a World-Class AI Team

  • Team Building and Mentorship: Hire, mentor, and develop high-performing teams comprising Endeavour Impact Managers, ML engineers, and data scientists. Focus on building a diverse and skilled workforce capable of delivering sustained impact aligned with mission objectives.
  • Cultivating Team Culture: Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture that promotes continuous learning and professional growth, in line with EIT’s values and culture. Encourage open communication, creativity, and a shared commitment to excellence.
  • Inspiring Engagement: Actively engage and inspire teams across EIT on the potential of AI to accelerate the achievement of missions and endeavours. Create an environment where team members feel motivated to explore new ideas and approaches that can drive impactful results.

Communicate & Evangelise AI’s Impact

  • Strategic External Engagements: Represent EIT in strategic engagements in Oxford and beyond, participating in conferences, seminars, and networking events to showcase the Institute’s AI initiatives and attract world-class talent and partnerships.
  • Advocating for AI: Communicate the impact of AI to diverse audiences, including stakeholders, partners, and the general public. Promote understanding of how AI can accelerate mission-driven objectives and contribute to broader societal benefits.
  • Staying Current with Advancements: Stay informed about the latest advancements in AI and ML, ensuring that the team incorporates cutting-edge methodologies and tools into their work. Foster a culture of continual innovation and adoption of best practices.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years in AI or ML roles, with at least 5 years in a leadership position managing high-impact projects and teams.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of AI/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), programming languages (e.g., Python, R), and relevant AI technologies.
  • Strategic and Leadership Skills: Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans, inspire and lead teams, and drive impactful AI initiatives
  • A collaborative mindset with excellent communication skills to effectively work with research teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates a dedication to EIT’s cultural principles by being collaborative and inclusive while also taking creative risks to drive innovation.
  • Values emotional intelligence and communicates with empathy and respect for others.
  • Thrives in a team that is curious, feels a strong sense of responsibility, and possesses the grit to achieve excellence.
  • Experience of early-stage research that involves significant scientific discovery in AI and/or other scientific domains like health and medicine, physics, biology etc.
