This is a new post and you will join colleagues in a very dynamic and forward looking Ophthalmology Department working alongside Ophthalmology Consultants and Management Team in the development of a comprehensive Ophthalmology service across Health Board based at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthenshire.The post will be based at Glangwili General Hospital in Carmarthenshire. An agreed job plan will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate. Some job plans may contain clinics on other hospital sites, but this will be discussed with the successful candidate.The successful candidate will work in close conjunction with other consultant physicians in the hospital and the community the distribution of these posts is as follows:Short term objectives:To develop a sub-specialty service within HDUHB ensuring a pathway for new and follow up patients is developed in line with demand and capacity planningTo develop delivery of a sub-specialty theatre services within HDUHBTo support the development of Junior staffTo support the multi-disciplinary teamTo ensure all processes and procedures are established in line with NICE guidanceMedium term objectives:To develop pathways in primary care supporting independent prescribing and further links between primary and secondary care with advice and support of training of medical and non medical staff.Main duties of the jobTo provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialtyDevelopment and delivery of sub-specialty service within the HBTriage of referrals into Ophthalmology serviceDelivery of specialist clinicsDelivery of specialist theatreInvolvement in the delivery of cataract servicesOversight and support for emergency eye casualty out of hoursTo participate in the on call rota 1:6 – if applicableTo participate in Ophthalmology service development and deliveryTo attend all relevant departmental meetingsTo participate in the clinical governance activities within the serviceAbout usHywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Qualifications
Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Specialist training in ophthalmology subspecialty
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills

Desirable

  • Appropriate Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD or MSc or equivalent
  • On Specialist Register with GMC or CCT due within 6 months of interview date

Clinical Experience
Essential

  • Broad based experience in Ophthalmology
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge and participation in CPD
  • Competence in cataract and corneal surgery
  • Able to apply knowledge
  • Safe and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience of communicating bad news
  • Meet the requirement of the GMC’s Good Medical Practice

Desirable

  • Experience of NHS
  • Wider experience, research and training in providing sub specialty service
  • Evidence of above average performance
  • Additional clinical and research qualification(s)

Clinical Governance
Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Comprehension of core philosophy and building blocks of Clinical Governance

Desirable

  • Knowledge of risk management
  • Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process

Research
Essential

  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence so as to improve clinical outcomes

Desirable

  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication
  • Research degree

Teaching
Essential

  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff

Desirable

  • Organisation of further teaching programmes in medical education
  • Training the Trainers experience

Management
Essential

  • Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
  • Willingness to participate in clinical management

Desirable

  • Evidence of management training
