ABOUT THE ROLEAre you an exceptional academic with an international profile in Criminology and Criminal Justice with a specialism in Policing seeking an opportunity to use your research profile to inform the delivery of exceptional teaching and support student success?We are recruiting to our criminology and policing provision at Northumbria University. We are seeking ambitious, scholarly professional colleagues into Associate Professor positions to join our academic team in the Department of Social Sciences.ABOUT THE TEAMThe Department of Social Sciences sits within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences. We provide high quality, research-rich experiential learning for students in Criminology and Policing, Sociology, and International Relations and Politics, at all levels from extended degree foundation to doctoral level. You will be part of a long established yet vibrant and growing department and a lively academic community which boasts several seminar series and a variety of avenues for you to pursue your research and knowledge exchange interests.Criminology and Policing is a large and still growing team of outstanding researchers, evidenced by our performance in REF 2021 where Northumbria ranked 3rd for research power in the Social Work and Social Policy Unit of Assessment. Research in Social Sciences is supported by the Centre for Crime and Policing, the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research, The Northern Hub for Veterans and Military Families Research. and the Interdisciplinary Research Themes of Gendered Violence and Abuse and Urban Futures. The Centre for Crime and Policing provides world-leading research on crime and policing that enhances understanding and practice in relation to some of the key global challenges of the 21st Century. These include transnational organised crime, the use (and abuse) of technology, social harm, forensics, law enforcement and criminal justice, and a host of related matters. This work is an important contribution to the development of evidence-based policymaking to inform the work of stakeholders globally, nationally, and regionally, including both domestic and international criminal justice systems and partnerships, governments, third sector agencies, private companies, and civil society organisations. Additionally, staff are engaged through a series of seven Departmental research clusters:

  • Critical Security and Foreign Policy
  • Environmental Justice
  • Power and Intersecting Inequalities
  • Crime, Harm and Ethics
  • Offenders with Multiple and Complex Needs
  • Gender Based Violence Research
  • Creative and Participatory Methodologies

We are keen to recruit to an open list of research and teaching interests in order to attract candidates whose research is at the cutting edge of theory, research, policy, and practice, and who can complement, but also broaden, our existing expertise.ABOUT YOUYou will be a research active member of our Criminology and Policing subject area and your own research interests and specialisms will complement and extend the broad, yet exciting and ever-growing, range of research we are engaged in.
