Purpose: To complete design and delivery of river restoration, wetland and other nature- based
projects.
Responsible to: Either Rivers Ecology or Restoration Team Leader 
Location: Office at Bayfield near Holt. Visits across Norfolk, Cam and Ely Ouse (CamEO) and potentially further afield
Job term: Full-time, permanent. 37.5 hours per week
Annual Leave Entitlement: 25 days plus 8 days bank holidays pro rata. 
Salary details: Grade 2: £26,818 (starting) or Grade 3: £32,473 (starting) with 9% employer Pension Contribution.

Norfolk Rivers Trust’s ambition is to deliver catchment-scale change to our water environment,
protecting our watercourses from pollution, improving habitat and ecological functioning of
streams and rivers and enhancing resilience to climate change.

It’s an exciting time in for the Trust, having grown to a team of 30 since it began in 2011,
and we are delivering major projects such as river re-meandering and flood plain connections,
farming and land management advice, new constructed wetlands, species re-introductions and
community engagement. The Rivers Ecology team complete consultancy work on behalf of Norfolk
Rivers Trust, with all profits donated to the trust.

Due to further growth, Norfolk Rivers Trust are now seeking an organised, self-motivated and
experienced project officer or senior project officer to join the team. You will use your
expertise in design and delivery to work on commercial and /or grant funded projects for either
the Rivers Ecology or Restoration teams.

Job Description:

Principal Responsibilities:

The successful applicant’s principal role will be to complete the design and delivery of a
variety of nature-based solutions projects including river restoration and constructed
wetlands. This will involve;

  • Meeting landowners and other clients on site.
  • Completing walkover surveys and options appraisals.
  • Completing concept and detailed designs for schemes.
  • Producing reports for these designs outlining the rationale and constraints.
  • Writing bids and preparing schedules for new work with support from the Team Leader. At the
    Senior Project Officer level there is an expectation of successfully bidding for new work and
    taking greater ownership of project development and management.
  • Submitting planning and consenting applications.
  • Preparing Construction and Design Management (CDM) paperwork including risk assessments and
    method statements.
  • Managing contractors during the construction phase of projects.
  • From time to time, other duties as determined by Rivers Ecology/ Norfolk Rivers Trust
    management. 

Person Specification: 

Education:

  • Minimum HND/BSc in Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Geography or other Land Management
    related subject.

Experience and knowledge: 

Essential:

  • Clear commitment to vision and values of Norfolk Rivers Trust.
  • Demonstratable understanding of fluvial geomorphology and river restoration work, including
    potential barriers to delivery.
  • Exceptional listening and communication skills, with a proven ability to influence multiple
    stakeholders.
  • Good organisational and reporting skills.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary organisation.
  • Awareness of the need for confidentiality and sensitivity.
  • Full UK driving licence with own car covered by business insurance.
  • Understanding of Construction and Design Management (CDM) Regulations.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders such as landowners, partner
    organisations, businesses and community groups.

 Desirable:

  • Experience of using AutoCAD software for design (essential for Senior Project Officer).
  • Experience working in a consultancy environment.
  • GIS experience (QGIS or ArcPro).
  • In date Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card and/or Safe Site Supervision/
    Management (SSSTS/SMSTS) course.
