We are a place of open, critical thinking, and the creation, sharing and dissemination of knowledge.The Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) is a leading national academic clinical trials unit within the College of Medicine and Health at the University of Birmingham specialising in the design, conduct and analysis of definitive late phase clinical trials and test evaluation studies, under the Directorship of Professor Katie Morris.Role SummaryThe post holder will play a key role in the research and educational activities of the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU), making a major contribution to the design, conduct and analysis of clinical studies and allied research within the Unit. They will lead successful funding bids and provide expert advice on clinical trials.The post holder will be a member of the BCTU Statistics Leadership team who are responsible for ensuring that BCTU studies are delivered to the highest standards of statistical excellence, and that the processes and procedures of the Statistics Team comply with current clinical trial regulatory requirements. They will have line management (including PDRs) responsibilities, undertake mentorship and supervision, and deliver training to the Statisticians in the Unit. They will deputise for the Statistics Team Leader at Unit level meetings.Scope of the RoleThe post holder will provide statistical advice and support to BCTU’s clinical trial, diagnostic and test evaluation research programme that addresses a wide and interesting range of medical problems of practical relevance to patients, carers and health care providers. The Unit is currently running studies in coloproctology, neurosciences, obstetrics and gynaecology, primary care, renal disease, surgery, burns, trauma and critical care. The post holder will work within the Statistics Team at BCTU and be responsible for providing statistical support to clinical studies in the Unit. They will be part of the Statistics leadership team contributing to the management, supervision and training of member of the BCTU Statistics Team.Main Duties

• As a member of BCTU Statistics Leadership team, contribute to the management of the team through assignment and prioritisation of work within the team, development of processes and standard operating procedures and through the recruitment and training needs of the team. Deputise for the Statistics Team Leader at Unit level meetings.
• Undertake line management (including PDRs) and supervision of staff members within the Statistics Team.
• Take an active and lead role in the training of staff, ensuring staff are appropriately trained to undertake their duties; including providing mentorship, coaching, one-to-one training. Help in developing the teams expertise in more complex clinical trial designs and methodologies.
• Provide expert statistical advice on the design of clinical trials and develop studies in collaboration with Clinical Investigators with the aim of submitting grant applications.
• Collaborate with Clinical Investigators and Trial Managers in writing study protocols and developing data collection forms.
• Collaborate with Programmers and Trial Managers in the development of data management systems.
• Take overall responsibility for the statistical aspect of studies by project managing the statistical contribution to studies. This includes determining the appropriate statistical analysis of study data and writing statistical analysis plans, supervising the monitoring of data quality and statistical analysis undertaken by the trial statistician, and taking responsibility for statistical contributions to publications.
• Take overall responsibility for the statistical analysis of study data, preparing and presenting reports for Data Monitoring and Steering Committees, and contribute to presentations and publications of study results.
• Present study results and methodological research at internal and external seminars and national and international conferences.
• Collaborate on relevant projects with researchers in other Departments within the University of Birmingham, and manage the contributions to such projects from members of the Statistics Team.
• Deliver teaching on statistics and clinical trial methodology and provide in-house staff training.
• Undertake statistical methodological research relevant to the studies being undertaken within BCTU and train members of the Statistics team in relevant areas. This may include the development of methodological grant submissions, and where appropriate supervision of PhD students.
• Provide expert statistical guidance to external bodies such as Editorial Boards and Grant Funders.
• Represent BCTU at internal and external clinical and scientific meetings.
• Support the delivery of clinical research in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), the Declaration of Helsinki, applicable legislation (including, but not limited to, the Medicines for Human Use Clinical Trials Regulations, Data Protection Act, Human Tissue Act), the Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care, Caldicott principals, and applicable NHS Trust and University policies and procedures, (including, but not limited to the University’s Data Protection Policy, Information Security Policy and Code of Practice for Research) in order to protect the research subject and the quality of each study.
• Actively manage equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.
• Supports the University’s sustainability agenda through resource efficient working.

Person SpecificationQualifications

• MSc or PhD in Statistics or a relevant higher degree.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Significant experience of working as an applied medical statistician, with experience of applying advanced statistical techniques for medical problems.
• Significant knowledge and experience in medical statistics and clinical trials, specifically in the design and writing of study protocols and the analysis, reporting and publication of results.
• Experience of supervising junior statisticians at a project level.
• Knowledge of complex clinical trials designs including (but not limited to) adaptive designs, platform trials and Bayesian approaches.
• Experience in statistical analysis packages and undertaking statistical analysis, preferably in SAS and/or STATA.
• Demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing statistical aspects of clinical research to deliver high quality results.
• Experience in writing reports and demonstrated success in the publication of research papers.
• Experience in teaching and presenting on clinical trial and statistical methodology.
• Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
