Our Deuterium and Tritium Technologies Branch is looking for a Tritium Research Scientist!Intro
The incumbent will be part of a well-established team of professionals and technologists specializing in the fields of tritium handling and processing, fusion reactor fuel cycle processes as well and heavy water production and purification technologies. The team’s objective is to support CNL’s Value Proposition through the Science & Technology (S&T) Directorate Structure (Advanced Reactors, Hydrogen & Tritium Technologies, Isotopes Radiobiology & Environment, Reactor Fleet Sustainability, and Safety & Security). The team is actively involved in developing, assessing and facilitating commercialization of innovative leading edge technologies through Business Development and Commercial Ventures Organization at CNL.The main mandate/function of the incumbent’s position is in carrying out research in the growing areas of tritium and fusion energy. The incumbent will participate in the existing tritium and fusion research program examining tritium interaction with materials, tritium generation and transport in various reactor designs such as small modular reactors, molten salt reactors and fusion reactors, and the removal of tritium from process streams utilizing CNL’s established expertise in tritium handling and removal technology. The incumbent will be responsible for delivering on commitments on Federal S&T as well as Commercial Projects. The incumbent is expected to develop and maintain core competencies for emerging opportunities in the above and related fields. The following are general areas of branch activities:

  • Heavy water management/production/upgrading based on CNL’s catalyst and process engineering technologies
  • Design and assessment of processes used in deuterium-tritium fusion power plant fuel cycles
  • Tritium removal processes from liquids and gases
  • Tritium adsorption on nanomaterials and nanostructured thin films
  • Fabrication and characterization of nanomaterials and nanostructured thin films for photovoltaic and betavoltaic devices

This position is to provide scientific and technical leadership in some of the areas identified above. The work would involve experimental, theoretical and process simulation using CNL-developed codes and commercial software. The incumbent will assist with existing and new collaborations and direct commercial activities.What will you be doing!

  • Accountable for the safe operation of all activities under their responsibility.
  • Responsible for aligning project priorities with those of the Directorate and the Science and Technology value proposition.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers and technologists to achieve goals of their projects.
  • Accountable to the progress of the project in terms of technical achievements and project delivery.
  • Accountable for supervision of staff involved in the projects that the incumbent is responsible for.
  • Prepare proposals to secure funding for research programs at CNL or other commercial opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of 2 years experience in applied research in an industrial or institutional setting
  • a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Chemistry or Physics is preferred
  • Postdoctoral or work experience in related field(s) is an asset.
  • Proficiency in fundamentals of chemistry, physics and engineering
  • Experience with operation of large scale or laboratory-scale chemistry/chemical engineering test loops would be an asset.
  • Chemical process engineering experience will be an asset.
  • Experience in process simulation using commercial software will be an asset.
  • An excellent written and oral command of the English language is required for this position
  • The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic self-starter who enjoys working with a team of scientists and technologists.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures in laboratory operations is essential.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite.
  • Experience with proposal preparation, budgeting, project planning is desired.
  • Knowledge of QA, license, and design code requirements for projects

Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. .   • Reviewing of literature and identifying intellectual property from work carried out.
  • Significant level of effort involving supervision and/or troubleshooting experimental work.

This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee.
