We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data, collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over the course of more than 60 years.As a valued member of our team, you’ll get:27 days annual leave, rising to 29 days after five years, plus 3 days for our Christmas closure10% employer pension contributionEnhanced maternity and paternity leave (subject to qualifying requirements)24 hour, 365-day access to support with physical, mental, social, health or financial issues plus access to our trained Welfare OfficersFlexible working opportunitiesOur River Water Quality and Ecology Group has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Environmental Chemist with project management and leadership skills, to support a range of major river-catchment scale projects.You’ll work closely with a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of chemists, microbiologists, modellers and lab technicians to support the Thames Initiative Research Platform, and related projects across the UK and internationally.Our research focusses on determining the sources and fates of nutrients within rivers and how they influence aquatic ecology. Much of our recent research has been applied to understanding the impacts of sewage pollution on river water quality.You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.Your main responsibilities will include:Building a body of work that is a recognisable, sustained contribution to the advancement of your area of river nutrient scienceMaking an impact as lead author or key contributor to several significant outputs each year. Producing high impact refereed publications or customer reportsWriting funding proposals and successfully attracting significant funding each yearManagement of environmental research projectsManagement of our chemistry laboratory facilities, including line management of three laboratory techniciansPlaying a prominent role on committees and panels, influencing the general direction of your science nationally and/or internationallyTraining in our latest laboratory, fieldwork and data interpretation techniques will be provided.For the role of Senior Environmental Chemist, we’re looking for somebody who has:A PhD with additional post-doctoral experience or equivalent relevant experienceA (2:1 or higher) degree, or Master’s in Chemistry, Environmental or Geographical SciencesExperience of writing research proposals and successfully attracting fundingInterpreting / modelling complex biogeochemical dataExperience of applying appropriate project management methods in the successful delivery of projects, including managing resources, people, risks, project deliverables and deadlinesAbility to lead and motivate people in your projects or team.
