Role purpose
This role is the technical lead for Economic Justice within Christian Aid’s ongoing funding partnership with the Open Society Foundations. Christian Aid’s Economic Justice strategy and Open Society Foundations-funded workstream share a vision to create a diverse movement to reimagine the global financial architecture from a justice perspective and influence multilateral decision-making over the next two years. This role will be pivotal in enabling the movement to develop joint policy and advocacy.
This role will ensure the delivery of high-quality policy, advocacy, movement building and programming in accordance with Christian Aid’s Programme Quality Standards. The postholder will play a pivotal role to contribute to Christian Aid’s economic justice policy and advocacy strategy and ensuring integration between our national, global and regional advocacy around both economic justice and governance & rights.
Key outcomes
- Oversee the global and regional advocacy partnerships who are delivering the Open Society Foundations workstream and support other programmes that align closely with the workstream with support and guidance from the Economic Justice Lead
- Provide technical lead to the wider Open Society programme on economic justice advocacy, related to global finance architecture reform, tax justice, debt issues and
- Strengthen the capacity of a diverse network of gender and climate actors to effectively advocate for a wider global economic architecture reform
- Develop and implement relevant and appropriate financial reporting mechanisms for the OSF programme, and support the wider programme by undertaking all partner grant disbursements
- Ensure that all programme advocacy is delivered in line with Christian Aid’s Programme Quality Standards
- Disseminate the programme learning both internally and externally and ensure that lessons learned shape and transform the programme
- Advisory support within the wider GAP team
Relationships
External: The role will represent Christian Aid externally with Open Society Foundations and other donors, other INGOs (including peer agencies in the ACT Alliance), practitioners, consultants, academics, critical thinkers and governance and rights experts especially those based in the global south and donors, to ensure that Christian Aid’s approaches and learning are informed by and inform external thinking/ debates
Internal: The postholder will be a core member of the OSF Programme team and will relate to the other OSF advisors on a daily basis to ensure a one programme approach. Relevant country programme staff and policy advisors in PPC, Global Thematic Advisors, other members of the Programme Policy, Research and Learning hub, Trusts and Foundations, Programme Quality and Operations. This role needs to be able to link grounded programmatic understanding and applied practice to more theoretical concepts in economic justice; and to be able to translate these to programme generalists and public policy advisers. This role will be particularly important in linking programmatic work with other key corporate Economic Justice campaigns, including those focused on business and human rights.
Decision making
Budgetary/savings responsibility This role will have delegated responsibility for ensuring global and regional partners work within their allocated budget envelopes and be responsible for raising any issues with the Programme Lead (Strategic Lead for Power and Poverty).
Analytical skills
Strong analytical skills and high levels of judgement required, with the ability to undertake both broad strategic analysis and context-specific political analysis. Ability to link short- and long-term trends and integrate different strands of work to identify key priorities and opportunities. Ability to manage complex information and present complex issues clearly and accessibly, with responsibility for developing and articulating organisational policy and good practice. Deep knowledge of programme management and experience in delivering economic justice advocacy will be fundamental to enabling good judgement, leadership and understanding.
Applied skills/knowledge and expertise
Essential
- Post graduate or equivalent in economics, international development or relevant discipline
- Significant experience in delivering programmes funded by external donors such as Trusts and Foundations
- Significant experience of working with coalition/networks of Civil Society and other like-minded groups and local partners on advocacy and policy, and of providing partner support and capacity building in planning, management.
- Ability to effectively network and support movement building, with the ability to develop a wide range of relevant contacts
- Detailed understanding of current thinking/ debates on economic justice and global economic architecture reform
- Substantial knowledge and experience of programme and advocacy approaches to economic justice, (i.e. policy research and advocacy, tax and debt, aid flows, inclusive budget cycles)
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to discuss sensitive issues and inspire others to take up new challenges
- Demonstrable ability to build effective working relationships across organisations, including at a distance
- Demonstrable experience working in global justice movements with an ability to build strong and cohesive relationships within complex and nuanced civil society environments.
- Creative thinking and track record of delivering innovative programme
- Highly developed communication skills in English (written and orally)
- Highly developed facilitation skills and ability to promote critical thinking and reflection
