Background
St Juliet Educational Centre, a community-based school in Kisumu Ndogo Kibera Slums and arche noVa;Initiative for People in Need is a registered NGO which supports people who are in need, have been working on a project aimed at Improving Access to WASH and Nutrition in St. Juliet School and Surrounding Communities in Kibera Slum.

arche noVa (AN) is a German NGO (www.arche-nova.org) working in humanitarian aid, development and emergency context in 14 countries all over the world, since 1992. AN expertise is in WASH sector and support of livelihoods with a wide range of activities to support local communities in WASH, promotion of alternative livelihoods and climate-smart agriculture, capacity building of target communities and Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction initiatives among others.

St. Juliet School isa local CBO school supporting education, WASH and Nutritional support services for the 547 pupils, 20 teachers and the surrounding community through Humanitarian Aid.

St. Juliet in partnership with arche noVa has implemented a 6 months project on WASH and Nutrition in Kibera with the support of GenialSozial; an initiative of Saxon Youth Foundation, Germany.

Kitchen Garden Construction for “Improving access to WASH and Nutrition in St. Juliet School and surrounding communities in Kibera slum ” Project is required. The objective of the Kitchen Garden is to boost the Nutritional intake for the 547 pupils of St. Juliet School as a sustainable food security measure.

Objectives

The project targets the pupils of St. Juliet School and the most vulnerable community members living around the school. The kitchen garden construction will be done by an external service provider with experience in such services to guarantee the sustainability of the project activity and minimize negative impacts on the environment and the community.

The project activity will directly benefit 547 pupils and 20 teachers in the school**.** community The surplus from the kitchen garden will benefit the most vulnerable community members neighbouring the school.

The overall objectives of the Consultancy are to:

  • Consider environmental, social, economic, cultural, and legal considerations regarding the proposed project activities.
  • Construct a kitchen garden for sufficient vegetable supply and some fruits suitable to the project location benefiting the 547 pupils and 20 teachers.

Propose Kitchen Garden maintenance measures to be taken after the implementation of the works for sustainability purposes.

Scope

The consultant is to design and carry out Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Studies to establish the impact of the project activities on the environment and social effects of the proposed project activities.

The key process will include the following:

  • Identification and analysis of the anticipated impacts of the proposed project activities on the physical, biological, social-cultural, and socio-economic environment.
  • Review of the existing data on the proposed project activities including social and economic activities within the project areas.
  • Production of an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Report for the proposed project activities and seeking the necessary approval for the issuance of a License, if required, by the relevant authorities.
  • Analysis detailing the positive and negative effects of the proposed project on the environment and EIA report recommending appropriate solutions to minimize any undesirable effects resulting from project activities.

Reports and Time schedule

Specific expected reports are:

Site analysis Report: This report shall comprise a brief site analysis to ascertain the space measurements and detailed work plan for the assignment.

  • Final Report: This report shall incorporate all the measures to be taken to ensure effective maintenance of the kitchen garden for sustainability.

Timescale
The duration of the assignment is 1 week .The assignment is expected to commence the soonest possible with the final report expected on 5th August 2024.
