BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in more than 40 countries and over 20 U.S. cities, the IRC provides resettlement, education, and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people.
SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:
The Survey Design and Analysis Intern will support IRC’s Elizabeth, New Jersey office in designing and administering exit surveys for clients. This is an intermediate-level internship designed for graduate students. The role will require data management skills, knowledge of survey administration, and a willingness to learn about the programs at IRC.
The Survey Design and Analysis Intern will have the opportunity to develop and administer exit surveys that are accessible to marginalized communities. The survey will focus on clients exiting programs from the following teams: Intake and Screening, Refugee Cash Assistance, and Assistance for Families and Older Adults.
This role is fully remote. This position is unpaid. It is 15 hours a week. An applicant needs work authorization in the USA to qualify. (CPT and OPT qualify.)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Survey Design
·Assist in modifying/designing exit surveys
Survey Administration
·Assist in the electronic administration of surveys
·Assist in administering surveys to clients via phone interviews (translation provided)
Data Management
·Data entry (of survey data)
·Monitor data systems
Data Analysis
·Review survey data results
·Present the data in a meaningful way for program management
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1.Interns will learn and apply the foundations of data management, including data system maintenance, data entry, and data analysis
2.Interns will apply their survey administration skills in a real-world setting
3.Interns will develop an ability for self-guided work
4.Interns will reflect on the role of data in international humanitarian relief
5.Interns will learn the basics of data philosophy
6.Interns will reflect on the role of ethics in data management
Minimum Qualifications:
REQUIREMENTS:
·Basic understanding of survey methodologies
·Ability to review academic literature on survey administration
·Understanding of foundational statistics necessary for survey analysis
·Client-centered mindset
·Intermediate Microsoft Excel abilities
·Fluency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint
·Self-guided and self-motivated
·Willing to learn new software programs and data analysis tools
·Access to reliable internet, a computer, and video call technology (laptops can be provided to an intern only while in the office)
·Ability to download and install software to complete remote work
·Ability to attend meetings via video call during Eastern Standard Time (NYC time)
·Willing to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts
·Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
RECOMMENDED (NOT REQUIRED):
·Experience with Microsoft Teams
·Experience with Microsoft Power BI
·Experience with data analysis
·Additional languages – especially Haitian Creole, Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian, Swahili, Dari, or Pashto
