MARINE MAPPING IN THE CARIBBEAN

SAERI is a partner of the Mid-Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (MAERI). The aim of
this role is to represent MAERI in EMODnet by harnessing MAERI’s network, knowledge of data,
and local presence in the Caribbean to meet the needs of the EMODnet Seabed Habitats phase 5
(2023–2025). Specifically, the focus will be on collecting and preparing data in the Eastern
Caribbean region.

EMODnet is a network of organisations who work together to observe the sea, process the data
according to international standards and make that information freely available as
interoperable data layers and data products. Launched in 2009, it is supported by the European
Commission under CINEA through various contracts.

SAERI is looking to hire a Marine Specialist

The purpose of this role is to provide Caribbean expertise in the European Marine Observation
and Data Network (EMODnet) Seabed Habitats project and build MAERI’s capacity in the area of
marine spatial data management.

This is a 12 month position that will be based in Anguilla, however there will be some
flexibility to work from a home base while relocation logistics are organised.

The post-holder will be required to deliver a number of tasks for the project including:

  • Provide advice about Caribbean habitats and existing benthic habitat classification systems
    for broad- scale mapping
  • Acquire seabed habitat maps and point observations from surveys for target areas of the
    Caribbean, and format them ready for publication on EMODnet Central Portal
  • Work with projects partners to create a stakeholder map for the Eastern Caribbean region

Main Essential Criteria includes:

  • Master Level in relevant marine Science
  • At least 3-5 years post graduate experience of addressing issues relevant to marine habitat
    mapping
  • Experience of working with spatial datasets in software such as ESRI ArcGIS or Quantum GIS
  • At least 2 years of proven successful engagement with a wide range of stakeholders
