Organizational Setting

The key mission of the FAO Representation in Somalia, which is led by FAO Representative (FAOR), is to assist and support the national government to develop policies, strategies and programme aimed at accelerating the Implementation and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the area of FAO’s global mandate and Strategic Objectives. More specifically, FAO’s response aims to address national needs and priorities in achieving food security, reducing hunger and malnutrition, developing agricultural, fishery and forestry sectors, and ensuring the sustainable use of environmental and natural resources and respond to recurrent emergencies. The current portfolio of activities of the FAO Representation in Somalia includes a wide scope of technical support interventions ranging from policy support through livestock and crop production, to natural resource management, Nutrition, value chain, food security analysis and water and land information management. FAO is also implementing several emergency, resilience-building, and development interventions, with the support of its five field offices and close to 400 staff in partnership with the Federal and State line ministries.

Reporting Lines

The position is under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Somalia, the general supervision of JOSP CTA and the direct supervision of the JOSP Project Manager.

Technical Focus

The incumbent in collaboration other JOSP project teams will address & solve any technical matters related to Natura Resource Management in a climate smart methodology. The technical focus of the incumbent also involves a multidisciplinary approach to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of natural resources while considering environmental, social, and economic factors.

Tasks and responsibilities

Project Implementation:

• Collaborate with the project team to implement and monitor natural resource management activities outlined in the Restore project.
• Ensure compliance with project goals and objectives related to sustainable resource utilization.

Field Assessment:

• Conduct thorough field assessments to identify and evaluate natural resource management opportunities and challenges in the Jowhar district and surrounding villages.
• Provide recommendations for effective resource conservation and sustainable practices.

Stakeholder Engagement:

• Foster positive relationships with local communities, governmental bodies, and relevant stakeholders involved in natural resource management.
• Facilitate community engagement and awareness programs on sustainable resource practices.

Data Collection and Analysis:

• Collect, compile, and analyse data related to natural resource utilization trends, environmental impact, and community needs.
• Prepare reports and presentations based on data analysis for project stakeholders.

Capacity Building:

• Develop and conduct training programs for local communities on sustainable natural resource management practices.
• Collaborate with relevant partners to build the capacity of local stakeholders in the Jowhar region.

Coordination:

• Work closely with other project officers and stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of natural resource management activities within the overall project framework.
• Participate in regular project meetings and provide updates on the progress of natural resource management initiatives.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in natural resource management, agricultural science, environmental science, or other relevant discipline from a reputable institution.
• At least 6 years of relevant experience with bachelor’s degree or 4 years of working experience with master’s degree in NRM issues specially agriculture, water, and environmental issues.
• Working knowledge (level C) of English and Somali.
• National of Somalia.

Technical/Functional Skills

• Understanding ecological principles, environmental processes, and the impact of human activities on ecosystems.

• Understanding the principles of watershed ecology and implementing strategies to sustainably manage water resources within a watershed.

• Awareness of climate change impacts on natural resources and the ability to develop and implement strategies for adaptation and mitigation.
• Skills in conducting and evaluating Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for development projects to assess potential environmental impacts.
• Proficient in collecting, analysing, and interpreting data related to natural resource management using scientific methods and statistical tools.
• Ability to work with local communities, understanding their needs, and involving them in sustainable resource management practices.
• Proven experience in implementing natural resource management projects.

• Experience in flood protection with evidence.
