Terms of Reference

Since the war in Ukraine began on 24 February 2022, over 1.5 M people have left the country and arrived in the Republic of Moldova (hereinafter “Moldova”). While many have since moved onwards into the European Union, over 122,000 persons displaced from Ukraine remain in the country. In close cooperation with the Government, UNHCR helps coordinate a multi-sectoral humanitarian response to support those displaced as well as the communities that host them.

UNHCR Moldova in Chisinau is looking for an intern to join our team and be part of this lifesaving refugee response.

The position:

The selected person will be joining the External Relations team, responsible for reporting, donor relations, communication, and coordination for advocacy purposes with the civil society, other UN agencies, government, and private sector. The internship will be working with the communications specialists.

We are looking for a dynamic student or graduate, who has an interest in humanitarian issues, moreover a commitment to refugees, and a desire to develop their skills and experience in media, communications (including web-based and social media), and event management. All candidates should be computer literate in Microsoft Office, have excellent writing skills (In Romanian) as well as the ability to always maintain a high level of confidentiality. Knowledge of social media management, graphic design or photography would be an asset.

Good interpersonal skills, adaptability, and attention to detail are essential.

Duties and responsibilities:

Content development for social media and support the community management activities of UNHCR Moldova accounts.

Support media monitoring activities and assist in the preparation of material for the media.

Maintain and nurture the database of contacts, including potential collaborations.

Creating and maintaining good relationships with refugees to build trust and amplify their voices.

Assist with the development and running of external relations events.

Support the translation of documents and global campaigns (Romanian – English).

Provide support to the daily running of the External Relations unit.

Minimum qualifications required

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and

Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Desirable qualifications and skills:

The candidate must be interested in communication and media-related work.

General computer skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Platforms like Canva, Meta or Adobe CS is an asset.

Social media skills.

Required languages: English – advance, required. Romanian – native level, required. Russian or Ukrainian – would be an asset.

Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.

Interest in organizing and participating in public events.

Ability to work as part of a multicultural team.

Conditions:

It is a full-time role (40 hours per week). The office is however flexible, and if successful candidate can work part-time, the working hours may be negotiated.

The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Chisinau, Moldova.

Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses. The allowance for full-time internship equals to 70% of the GS grade 3 Step 1 i.e. 13,142.73 MDL. The actual payment will be calculated based on the percentage worked.
