Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the agency for human settlements mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. Together with governments, the agency is responsible for promoting and consolidating collaboration with all partners, including local authorities, private and non-governmental organizations in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA), based in Bonn, Germany, helps water and sanitation operators help one another. The Alliance is facilitated by by UN-Habitat, as an international network created in 2009 to support operators through Water Operator’s Partnerships (WOPs) – not-for-profit peer support partnerships between water and sanitation operators aimed at enhancing their capacity and performance to provide a better service to more people in support of the SDGs. The intern will report directly to professional staff of GWOPA and work under the overall supervision of the Head of GWOPA. Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the needs of the substantive area where the intern is placed. A tailored work plan will be developed. The intern will focus his/her work on one or more of the following thematic and operational areas of GWOPA: – Support planning, implementation and reporting on GWOPA’s projects – Knowledge development, documentation and management of communities of practice – Supporting the preparation of GWOPA global outreach and learning events – Development and maintenance of GWOPA’s databases on monitoring of WOPs and water operators – Project/programme budget and financial management Duties may include, but are not limited to: – Assisting in the preparation of draft concept papers, background documents, position papers; – Assisting in the development of project concept notes/project briefs and project documents for resource mobilization; – Data management and analysis; – Conduct research on pertinent topics related to water and sanitation – Assist with communication and information management – Assist with the management of websites and drafting of newsletters; – Assist in the preparation, implementation and follow-up of events and workshops – Assist in the administration, budgeting and financial management aspects of programme management – Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programme of GWOPA
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Studies in Water and Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Urban Development, Urban Planning, Urban Environment, Communications/Journalism, Business/Accounting and Development Studies are preferred. Applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications; design software skills are desirable; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations with a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter, and have the demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs – which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
