Job title:

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Job description

Are you curious about how viruses form, evolve and infect their hosts? We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in Mathematical Biology or Computational Biophysics to develop models of virus structure, viral evolution, and mechanisms in viral life cycles based on experimental data. In collaboration with the Stockley lab in Leeds, we discovered a code embedded within the genetic code of human viruses that promotes efficient formation of viral particles. This code relies on multiple dispersed sequence/structure motifs in the viral genome. Your computational modelling will enable us to study the mechanisms by which this code promotes virion formation, orchestrates different stages of the viral life cycle, and imposes constraints on viral evolution. In particular, dynamic changes of this code during a viral life cycle destabilise the protective viral protein shell and thus facilitate the timely release of the viral genome. Your modelling will study this interplay between capsid stability and genome organisation, contributing to its exploitation in drug/gene delivery, therapy and vaccination. This position is funded by the Wellcome Trust and is fixed term for 3 years. You will join the interdisciplinary team of Professor Reidun Twarock (York/theory, where this post will be based) and Professor Peter Stockley (Leeds/experiment) and contribute to the production of high-quality research papers, as well as assist with the dissemination of the research. We offer excellent career prospects and mentoring, which makes this an ideal springboard for an ambitious scientist with career aspirations in academia or industry.Requirement:

  • You should have a PhD in physics, mathematics, or theoretical/computational biology.
  • Prior experience in computational modelling is an advantage.

For enquiries, please contact Prof Reidun Twarock ([email protected]; please use subject line “post-doc-October2024” and include a curriculum vitae).
