As a Data Scientist in the Science and Natural Perils team, you will be part of a team of experienced scientists, catastrophe modelers, and actuaries within AXA XL’s Risk Management function. The primary focus of the team is to integrate expert knowledge, scientific expertise, and data science related to natural catastrophes into the (re)insurance decision-making process, impacting portfolio aggregation, technical pricing, capital modeling, and business planning.DISCOVER your opportunityWhat will your essential responsibilities include?· Manage research projects, both internal and with external collaborators, focused on leveraging data science tools (e.g., stochastic/statistical modeling , machine learning, deep learning, AI,) in catastrophe risk management, portfolio analytics, and the science of natural catastrophes· Deliver advanced analytics, tools, models, and insights to enable risk-based oversight and drive continuous improvement of AXA XL’s business. This includes but is not limited to (a) gathering relevant data from various sources, (b) developing appropriate statistical and machine learning models (e.g., neural networks and deep learning, among others), (c) developing prototype models to conduct various test and validation exercises, and (d) introducing the models in AXA XL’s existing frameworks· Collaborate with senior leadership and other subject matter experts (e.g., scientists, actuaries, underwriters, academics, among others) to develop effective methodologies and tools for modeling the consequences of natural catastrophes (e.g., hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, wildfires, etc.) on AXA XL’s business· Develop innovative methods to evaluate the performance of existing catastrophe models and enable better forward-looking assessments· Serve as a data-science subject matter expert, leading initiatives to enhance data quality, insight, and alignment· Manage and automate key processes and source relevant datasets for data analytics (e.g., climate and geophysical data, exposure and loss data, images, etc.)· Develop and cultivate strategic relationships with other internal technical experts engaged in advanced analytics, particularly with the GIS team, the Pricing team, and the Innovation, Data & Analytics team· Communicate findings and recommendations to key stakeholders (including underwriters, actuaries, cat modellers, and senior management) clearly and concisely via both oral presentations and written reports· Build relationships with key thinkers and practitioners in the academic / research to bring the latest data science innovation into AXA XL’s modelling practices and to stay up to date with new methodologies and applications in the field of AI and data science· Representing data and information visually through graphical or interactive means such as charts, graphs, maps, or dashboards (e.g., Power Bl, and others).You will report to Senior Actuary – Science & Natural Perils.QualificationsSHARE your talentWe’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:Required Skills and Abilities:· Master’s degree or PhD in a numerical subject (e.g., computer science, mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering, finance) with robust analytical and quantitative skills· Ability to translate complex technical information into clear and concise language for various audiences· Ability to identify and process raw data, trends, analysis, and assessments in order to aggregate disparate information, leveraging both analytic and visualization tools· An interest in any field of science related to natural disasters (e.g., atmospheric science, seismology, engineering, hydrology, etc.)· Excellent time management and communication skills to prioritize effectively· Experience in statistical and probabilistic / data modeling· Ability to build a network with internal and external stakeholders· A keen eye for detail and a problem-solving mindset with a focus on process improvement· Excellent programming skills in Python, R, SQL, and knowledge of some common machine learning libraries (such as sklearn, Keras, TensorFlow, or PyTorch)· Some hands-on experience in data science and machine learning· Experience with structured (e.g., tabular data) and unstructured (e.g., images) datasetsDesired Skills and Abilities:· Some understanding of insurance analytics methods· A willingness to undertake projects in fields outside of your area of direct expertise· Experience in managing research projects and excellent multi-tasking skills· Some experience building production data solutions in (re)insurance· Some catastrophe modelling experience in (re)insurance industry experience; e.g knowledge of RMS (Risk Link and HD) and AIR· Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Qlik Sense, Tableau)· Experience in cloud computing, and cloud-based servicesFIND your futureAXA XL, the P&C and specialty risk division of AXA, is known for solving complex risks.
