About usUCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, from molecular scale to complex systems.This post sits in the Advanced Propulsion Lab (APL), one of the large world class collaborative research laboratories that form part of the UCL East campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London. APL brings together researchers from the UCL departments of Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, with this post being a joint appointment between the two departments, supported by HORIBA. Opened in September 2023, UCL East unites academic activities across experiments, arts, society and technology, integrating research and education, theory and practice – with cross-disciplinarily, innovation and public engagement, dedicated to disruptive thinking and discovery across disciplines and beyond academic walls, to find solutions to the biggest challenges for future living.About the roleThe main duty of the role is to lead the research and teaching in the APL with focus on the critical challenge of decarbonizing the transport sector, including land, sea and air applications, as well as the generation of electrofuels to service these sectors, having a truly molecules-to-systems reach.The successful candidate will lead on the development of research promoting the future of advanced propulsion; will carry out and publish high-quality world-class research which complements the existing departmental and Faculty activities; will secure research grant funding to support a vibrant research programme; and will maintain national and international networks and partnerships with industry, other academic institutions, government, and other relevant organisations to maximise research activities.About youThe successful candidate will have a PhD/EngD in engineering, chemistry, physics or relevant discipline or will have relevant equivalent experience, as well as substantial international reputation in scholarship and research, or equivalent industrial experience, and an excellent publication record in international journals in engineering with emphasis on the areas of relevance to the post.Equally important is vision, leadership and ability to manage a substantial research team, to train, guide and motivate research students and junior academic colleagues, and to establish a leading research presence within UCL.What we offerAs well as the exciting opportunities this role presents we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
