The Role and the DepartmentThe Student Immigration and Funding Service (SIFS) works with internal colleagues and external partners to provide high quality advice and support relating to immigration legislation and financial support for both undergraduate and postgraduate students and applicants.The immigration services provided by SIFS include:
- Provision of Student immigration advice to students, academic and professional services staff.
- Right to study checks for all students subject to immigration regulation.
- Monitoring of academic engagement and related reporting to UK Visas & Immigration via the Sponsor Management System (SMS).
- Provision of Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for visa extensions.
- Right to work checks for students being employed at the University.
The Service is part of the Student & Academic Services Directorate (SASD). The Directorate provides a professional administrative support service to University staff, students and applicants.The Academic Registrar is the head of the Directorate and is responsible to the Vice Provost for its management. The following services fall under the SASD’s remit:
- Access and Engagement
- Curriculum, Learning and Assessment
- Recruitment and Admissions
- Student Immigration and Funding
- Student Registry
All of these services are based at either the Palatine Centre or Mountjoy Centre in Durham City. The University operates a hybrid working policy which currently offers the opportunity to work from home up to 3 days per week.You will play a key part in the provision of high-quality Student immigration advice and in supporting UKVI compliance activity to meet the requirements of a Student Route UKVI sponsor licence. You will have a good working knowledge of the Student Sponsor Guidance and have experience of advising on the varying challenges faced by those holding and seeking to apply for a Student Route visa.You will undertake day to day administrative tasks within UKVI’s Sponsor Management System (SMS) such as reporting student change in circumstance, successful completion for Graduate visa purposes and the issuance of CAS for continuing students. You will also support academic re-engagement activities, by contacting and meeting with students to discuss and explain the implications of Student visa sponsorship withdrawal.You must also be a flexible team worker able to take responsibility for managing a varied workload to a high standard. A high level of accuracy, sometimes under pressure, is essential. You will be dealing with highly confidential and potentially sensitive information, and which must be kept in accordance with the principles of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and in the strictest confidence.
