The roleThis is an exciting opportunity for a skilled, motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to join the UKRI National AI Research Hub in AI for Collective Intelligence ( ) to conduct research on healthcare technologies embedded in complex care ecosystems. Opportunities to work on different healthcare ecosystem projects being pursued by the hub will be available, but the main focus will be on supporting people with diabetes to choose their self-care and shared-care technology ecosystem via co-design/participatory design. The position requires expertise in HCI, co-design and human-AI interaction, and would benefit from experience working within the context of diabetes. The AI4CI Hub is a collaboration between a consortium of seven partner universities (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Glasgow, UCL and Ulster). The Hub’s ambition is to pursue cutting edge research at the intersection between the fields of applied AI and Collective Intelligence across five application domains (Pandemic Resilience, Smart cities, Financial Stability, Health Ecosystems and Environmental Intelligence) and two cross-cutting themes (Human-Centred Design and Infrastructure and Governance). Research within each application domain and cross-cutting theme will be pursued by a team of academics, postdocs and PhDs working with academic and non-academic stakeholder partners from relevant sectors, such as the NHS.What will you be doing?

  • Contribute to the development and delivery of the research programme on AI4CI Health working with the Leads Dr Aisling O’Kane at Bristol and Theresa Smith at Bath.
  • Conduct literature reviews and technology reviews
  • Collaborate on study design and lead ethical approvals
  • Lead on recruitment and retention of participants
  • Conduct data collection activities, such as interviews and focus groups
  • Use qualitative analysis methods, such as thematic analysis and interaction analysis
  • Organise and facilitate co-design sessions
  • Lead on prototyping co-design solutions
  • Lead on evaluating prototypes using mixed methods
  • Lead on writing up and presenting findings

You should apply ifYou should apply if you are interested in how to support people making choices about their increasingly complex care ecosystems and you should have or be working towards a PhD in a related subject. This role will require:

  • Significant background knowledge and experience in either: human-computer interaction, participatory design, human-AI interaction, or diabetes care.
  • Experience in using participatory methods such as co-design
  • Methodological skills in interviewing, observation, workshop facilitation, data analysis, prototyping
  • Experience of collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Familiarity with ethical and data governance requirements for research.
  • Capacity to develop, maintain and enhance the international network of contacts related to AI4CI
  • Willingness and ability to perform academic service roles in the context of AI4CI
