Job Description

Summary:

Supports the implementation of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Practical Process Improvement (PPI) Business System within the site. Works closely with site and business leadership to mature PPI coaching tools to drive a problem-solving and continuous improvement culture. Partners with Site and Functional teams to facilitate Kaizens that improve performance results, and develop PPI capability at various levels through training, qualification, and coaching!

Essential Functions:

Operational Excellence Projects

  • Analyzes/defines operational opportunities primarily within site operations by conducting detailed operational, value stream, and financial analyses, interviewing key personnel, and observing operations.

  • Build specific proposals for operational improvement projects to senior management, including basic cost-benefit analysis, based on assessment of opportunities.

  • Perform approved operational improvement projects, ensuring projects achieve desired objectives.

  • Maintains projects on time and budget, leads expectations and risks, and ensures post-implementation benefits are realized.

  • Calculates savings realized through projects, working with Finance and Project sponsors to achieve the agreed final financial impact of continuous improvement projects.

  • Develop and execute SQL queries to retrieve, manipulate, and analyze data from various sources and roll-out projects focused on advanced process modeling and visualizations.

  • Apply Microsoft Power Automate and Python Programming to create workflows that streamline business processes and improve efficiency.

Operational Excellence Program

  • Supports the development of an operational excellence culture by using various methodologies and tools such as lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, pull manufacturing, total productive maintenance, waste reduction in scrap, cycle time, Work in Progress (WIP), scrap and labor utilization.

  • Develop a deep understanding of the site’s manufacturing capabilities and processes.

  • Acts as an internal consultant for sharing and implementation of operational excellence best practices within the site.

  • Assists in the education and training of site staff on Operational excellence principles.

  • Maintains a safe working environment and reports potential hazards.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher learning institution with studies in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Operations is highly preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic industry and/or Lean manufacturing principles is preferred or an equivalent combination experience.

  • Minimum 2 years experience executing operational excellence initiatives or continuous improvement projects.

  • Experience in the following tools is preferred:

  • Value stream mapping, visual management/5S, Kanban, standard work, metric boards, Gemba, stand-up meetings, and project funnel development.

  • Microsoft Office suite, Smartsheet, Power BI, Mini-tab, Microsoft Power Automate, Python Programming, or other relevant data analytics/visual management tools.

  • Project management hands-on experience in leading cross-functional projects or changes throughout all levels of business is an asset.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and meaningful work experience may be considered.

Carry out all duties within strict compliance to Patheon quality systems SOP’s and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Maintain workspace in a clean and orderly fashion.  Actively engage in and adhere to departmental systems to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow (visual management, scheduling systems, etc.). Be client and patient conscious at all times. Understand Key Performance Indicators and strive to improve the performance of the team by identifying areas for system improvements and engage in problem solving. Models positive thinking and is open to change, motivating the team to adapt to shifts in priorities and new ways of working. Proactively identify areas for improvement in the execution of procedures. Communicate risks to timelines in a proactive manner.  Consistently strives to improve skills and knowledge in related field.  

Physical Requirements:

Light physical effort and fatigue. Walks, sits or stands for limited periods. May require occasional equipment operation including keyboard equipment. Lifts light items for limited duration. Typically located in a comfortable indoor area. There may be regular exposure to mild physical discomfort from factors such as dust, fumes or odours, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts, or bright lights. Use of Personal Protective equipment may be required and may include any of the following: safety glasses, safety shoes, lab coat, gloves, hair net, beard cover, safety apron, respirator on occasionally.
