The BGS is recruiting new senior staff for our Groundwater team, and we welcome applications from experienced hydrogeologists and scientists working in groundwater-related topics who want to work with us and use their knowledge and skills to meet societal need for a sustainable future.You can find out more about the BGS StrategyThese roles can either be based in Nottingham or EdinburghAppointment will be at UKRI Pay Band E/S2 – salary is £48,802 to £53,682 per annum depending on qualifications and experience (pay award pending).A including an outstanding pension scheme (with a very generous employer contribution – on average 27% of your pay), 30 days annual leave plus bank holidays, and access to flexi-time and hybrid working.

About our Groundwater teamBGS is recognised by its stakeholders as the authoritative national and international long-term provider of data, information and impartial advice on groundwater resources. BGS has a global reputation for impactful research into groundwater resources and particularly for its role in water security and climate-change adaptation and implications for human health and livelihoods. In the UK, BGS undertakes a wide range of field- and desk-based projects on groundwater quality, quantity and flows, working at scales from local to national to address challenges on water security and the energy transition.You will apply specialist scientific and technical skills to deliver and develop research projects for BGS. You will be working on several projects and will be required to become involved with a range of work, including:

  • Applying specialist hydrogeology, numerical and geoscience skills and working collaboratively to deliver and develop research projects for BGS.
  • Leading projects and teams in hydrogeological data collection, data analysis, interpretation and reporting.
  • Writing and delivering publications, presentations and funding applications.
  • Building engagement and collaboration with internal and external partners and customers, including overseas.
  • Playing an active part in the groundwater science community, publishing research and presenting at conferences.
  • Managing projects and people.

We are keen to hear from you if you meet the following essential requirements. We will review essential and desirable requirements at both the shortlisting and interview stage.Essential

  • A PhD with a strong element of hydrogeology or water resource science (or a hydrogeology or closely related MSc, plus significant post graduate work experience in a hydrogeology research environment. (S, I)
