We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Research Associate to become a core part of a team working in the field of sustainable aviation.The University of Bath is the principal academic collaborator on HyFIVE – Hydrogen Storage, Conveyance, Fuelling, Indication and Venting, part of the Aerospace Technology Institute’s Destination Zero programme.HyFIVE is a strategic industrial research programme to develop and test a smart, connected liquid hydrogen (LH2) fuel system for the next generation of zero emission aircraft. The scope of HyFIVE is to deliver a TRL 6- ground demonstration of an LH2 fuel system with key technology maturity and advanced systems integration. The programme includes the storage, conveyance, indication, venting and fuelling of LH2 to enable both Hydrogen Electric Propulsion (HEP) and Hydrogen Combustion (HC) powered commuter, regional, narrow body and business jet aircraft.The project is funded by Innovate UK through the Aerospace Technology Institute.This position is offered on a full-time fixed term basis until 31 December 2027.About youOur ideal candidate will have:

  • a PhD or equivalent in a relevant research area
  • good working knowledge of hydrogen fuel systems and/or pumping technology
  • familiarity with fluid dynamic behaviour and characterisation of cryogenic flows and seals
  • experience modelling heat transfer processes (single and/or multi-phase)
  • delivered recognised research presentations with international reach
