  • Applications are invited for one 6-month clinical fellow post in general anaesthesia, working at Charing Cross Hospital. One post is available from February 2025. Start dates after this time will also be considered. There may also be scope for an extension. This post is ideally suited to either an anaesthetist who has completed their Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC) and Primary FRCA and is looking to further their anaesthetic experience prior to securing a specialist or higher training post.
  • The clinical duties would cover the Stage 2 curriculum of the Royal College of Anaesthesia (RCOA). There will also be opportunities to undertake activities that enhance their non-clinical skills such as education, research, and quality improvement and publication preparation.
  • As a Junior Clinical Fellow in anaesthesia, the post-holder will take part in a 1:8 junior registrar on-call rota alongside other trainees. Majority of the post holder’s clinical time will be spent on a variety of surgical lists. The surgical specialties covered at Charing Cross hospital are Neurosurgery (including interventional neuro-radiology), Head and Neck (including robotic assisted surgery), General oncology, Urology (including robotic assisted surgery), ENT, Plastics, Colorectal (including HIPEC), Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology. This will enable enough clinical time to cover the Stage 2 requirements.

Main duties of the job

  • As a Junior Clinical Fellow in anaesthesia, the post-holder will take part in a 1:8 junior registrar on-call rota alongside other trainees. Majority of the post holder’s clinical time will be spent on a variety of surgical lists. The surgical specialties covered at Charing Cross hospital are Neurosurgery (including interventional neuro-radiology), Head and Neck (including robotic assisted surgery), General oncology, Urology (including robotic assisted surgery), ENT, Plastics, Colorectal (including HIPEC), Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology. This will enable enough clinical time to cover the Stage 2 requirements.
  • There is a strong departmental tradition of performing, presenting, and publishing research and audit projects. The post holder will support developments in education, research, leadership and quality improvement projects within the Trust.
  • Normal theatre working day 07:30 – 17:30
  • Long Day 07.30 – 20:00 (1:8)
  • Night shift 19.30 – 08:00 (1:8)

  • Full GMC registered/ licensed Medical Practitioner (GMC sponsorship may be available for successful candidates)
  • Primary FRCA (or equivalent)

Desirable criteria

  • Distinctions, prizes
  • MD, PhD

Clinical skillsEssential criteria

  • Demonstrates a broad range of clinical and assessment skills in anaesthesia

Desirable criteria

  • Advanced life support (ALS) provider or equivalent, ATLS, ALS, EPLS

Academic achievements including research/publicationsEssential criteria

  • Good understanding of principles of research

Desirable criteria

  • Has participated in research
  • Peer reviewed publication
  • Experience of presenting data locally/ regionally/ nationally

AuditEssential criteria

  • Understanding of the application of audit and clinical governance to clinical practice

Desirable criteria

  • Initiated and completed quality improvement projects

Knowledge/skills and Clinical ExpertiseEssential criteria

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in anaesthesia and intensive care in a structured training programme
  • Knowledge of UK Health Systems
  • Understands current issues in NHS & Anaesthesia

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of developing subspecialty interest in anaesthesia relevant to Charing Cross hospital
  • Advanced life support (ALS) provider or equivalent, ATLS, ALS, EPLS

Teaching and trainingEssential criteria

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff

Desirable criteria

  • Trained educator (e.g. GIC, Train the Trainer)
  • Initiated, led and delivered a teaching programme
