Department of Environment & GeographyDue to an expansion in our capabilities, we are looking for a Grade 5 Technician to take over the support of our Physical Geography and Microscopy Laboratories. The laboratory supports a wide range of physical geography laboratory and microscopy work undertaken by undergraduate project students, PhD research students and academic and postdoctoral staff. The post is full time and is on a permanent contract.RoleAs a Technician, you will be responsible for running these established laboratories on a day to day basis. You will ensure the physical and geography and microscopy research laboratories are run safely and in a tidy and efficient manner. As such, you will oversee continuity of supply of both equipment and consumables. You will also demonstrate how to use the equipment in the laboratories safely and effectively to final year project students, masters students, PhD research students and academic and postdoctoral staff. You will join an established team of technicians within the Department, each of whom specialises in supporting their own research areas. You will be expected to work with the team in a collegiate manner to ensure the laboratory facility as a whole operates in a smooth manner.Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
- You should have a degree in a relevant field
- You should be able to demonstrate a background and experience in physical geography laboratory work, including the use and maintenance of microscopes, particle size analysers, furnaces, ovens and centrifuges.
- You should be able to prepare samples for palaeo-ecological analyses (diatoms, pollen, foraminifera, testate amoebae) and to assist with microfossil identifications and to train students in microfossil sample preparation and identifications
- You should also be able to demonstrate experience of using chemicals in a laboratory environment
- You should have good communication skills and be able to explain scientific ideas and techniques to students and research staff
- You should be capable of planning your own work in an independent manner and show that you are capable of solving problems independently. This should be coupled with the ability to know your own limits and when to call on colleagues for assistance.
- You should have a demonstrable ability to work as a member of a wider team of technical support specialists in order to meet the aims of the Department and the team
- You should be committed to continuing professional development and be open to acquiring professional registration as part of your role
