Who are we?
The British Embassy in Paris is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The British Defence Staff (BDS) – France plays a key role in developing, maintaining and promoting the UK-French defence and security relationship, and we are now looking for an Accountant.
Main purpose of job:
The Accountant will support the team in its mission to build enduring strategic relationships with a wide range of French partners in order to further the objectives outlined in the UK Defence Strategy for France.
Roles and responsibilities:
- As delegated Account Operator, record and reconcile all transactions on the Defence Attaché Imprest Account;
- Process and record all financial claims for British Defence Staff;
- Process medical claims submitted by BDS and liaise with the Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie to register individuals;
- The rapid payment of deposits, agency fees and initial rent, including liaising with property agencies, EJSU and budget holders as necessary, to enable incoming members of the wider France network to secure a residence;
- Lead on finance and budget related compliance policy and implementation, in close conjunction with the chief of staff;
- Ensure the correct use of all charging codes;
- Preparing the end of month documents to send to MoD DB;
- Preparing the ePC (Electronic Purchasing Card) monthly returns;
- Tracking the BDS budget expenditure and conduct monthly reporting to the Defence Attaché;
- Liaising with Embassy Accounts to ensure all HERA entries are correct and have supporting documentation;
- Provide initial in-country support and advice to new Navy and RAF incoming military exchange liaison officers of the France Network; provide formal attestations for estate agents, banks, healthcare etc;
- Regularly update the new arrivals Welcome Booklet for incoming members of the France Network;
- Track all Local Staff leave and sick leave and keep up to date records for each staff member;
- Carry out duties of BDS Duty Officer;
- Planning and execution of support arrangements for the annual 11 November service of remembrance in Notre Dame cathedral;
- Line Manager for the diplomatic clearances officer;
- Working with other BDS-France and Embassy staff on common tasks as required.

Our Ideal Candidate Shows:
- Fluent English (both written and spoken, C1* level for CEFR framework);
- Proficiency in French (both written and spoken, B2/C1* level for CEFR framework);
- At least 1 year of prior experience in accounting or office management/budget management;
- Educational background in accounting, finances, similar or equivalent work experience in related field;
- Able to multi-task and prioritise urgent work while ensuring that routine tasks are not overlooked;
- Able to present a professional image of the BDS – France;
- Able to communicate clearly and to liaise closely with contacts at all levels;
- Computer literate (Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Sharepoint);
- Able to work out of hours for specific events;
- Possess an enthusiastic, team-player attitude;
- Have a strong sense of service.

This is a full-time, permanent position.
All appointments are subject to professional background check satisfactory security clearance.
