Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The North America Office helps to implement the UN Environment Programme’s Regional programs in North America by initiating, coordinating and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental, challenges, opportunities and emergencies. This position is located in the North America Office in Washington D.C., USA. The Environmental Communications Intern will undertake a range of assignments to engage with regional audiences to raise environmental awareness and promote change in policy and practice.
This will include the following duties:
- Generate content ideas and social media strategies to promote the UNEP regional digital platforms;
- Contribute to the implementation of global campaign activities and advocacy initiatives in the region, with a focus on the triple planetary crises;
- Assist in the planning and coordination of events, meetings, and key UN International Days, including World Environment Day;
- Manage the regional web site as well as the North American intranet presence;
- Use software systems like Canva and Adobe to create compelling social media graphics, multi-media online content and communications materials;
- Assist in the timely delivery of flagship informational and promotional products to key stakeholders and the media;
- Research and prepare clear and compelling reports, stories, presentations and other communications materials in support of regional priorities;
- Support outreach to partners, governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and other relevant stakeholders, including youth;
- Attend and report back on relevant meetings, conferences, and other events, as requested;
- Update and maintain contact database for stakeholders and partners, including media;
- Perform any other communications-related duties, as required.
Qualifications/special skills
- Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Be computer literate in standard software applications. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage. NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
