Through the generous contributions of both foundations, WCHRI has been able to support the research excellence, training and development activities of investigators from a wide range of clinical and academic disciplines, all focusing their efforts on improving health outcomes for women and children in our province.WCHRI is the only research institute in Canada — and one of the few in the world — to focus on women’s and children’s health, including perinatal health. The Institute is considered to be a national authority and leader in women’s and children’s health issues. The scope and complexity of WCHRI is extensive –supporting over 430 members from 14 faculties and three colleges across the University of Alberta.Position SummaryUnder the direction of the Research Associate in WCHRI, this is a senior-level, Research Coordinator based at the University of Alberta. The Research Coordinator tasks will support research and knowledge translation activities for the Maskwacis portion of the Indigenous Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (I-HeLTI). I-HeLTI is a CIHR-funded, multi-year, multi-community cohort study involving mothers, fathers, children and other family members in 23 Indigenous communities in Alberta and BC.This Research Coordinator will also support other related research guided by the Maskwacis Wakhohtowin Research Group (WRG) and partners at the University of Alberta. The WRG includes community-based and university-based team members. This position will work in collaboration withother WCHRI staff involved with community-led Indigenous health research.The position will be instrumental in supporting WRG research activities and building and maintaining relationships within the multiple communities and many stakeholders that are part of I-HeLTI.Duties

  • Under minimal supervision, works collaboratively with the Senior Community-based Research Coordinator and other members of the WRG to design and conduct complex scientific research specifically related to Indigenous family health, including pregnancy, maternal, paternal and child health outcomes and related areas of inquiry; organizes and prepares source documents, data collection forms, charts, electronic data entry, screening logs and assists with advertising research projects and activities.
  • Adheres to OCAP principles, Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPs), standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), International Conference on Harmonization (ICH), Good Clinical Practices (GCPs), and all other applicable regulatory requirements; prepares Human Research Ethics Board (HREB) submissions, including informed consents and maintains trial-related documents, manages ethics approval renewals, and responds to issues arising from ethics reviews; ensures all aspects of privacy and data integrity are adhered to in accordance with the ethics approval, community research agreements, and the Health Information Act.
  • Helps to maintain an overall schedule combining deliverables for all projects; monitors activities and timelines to ensure deliverables and objectives are met, and adjusts activities and timelines as needed.
  • Supports data collection and undertakes analysis of qualitative and quantitative research data as needed. Travels to research sites to conduct and support research activities, including community engagement, research participant recruiting, project promotion, local staff/volunteer training and supervision, data collection, reporting, etc.
  • Writes research papers and supports preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals as guided by Senior Community Research Coordinator and WRG; may present research results at investigator meetings, community forums, conferences, and related settings; researches, references and summarizes new information on perinatal health, Indigenous health, and related areas, and provides staff with regular updates.
  • Supports and trains research trainees and community-based research staff, students, and volunteers in completing ethics applications, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, and writing academic papers and reports; fosters staff development by identifying university and community-based opportunities for professional growth and development.

Qualifications

  • MSc in health-related discipline required (e.g. Community or Public Health; experience in Indigenous health preferred).
  • Minimum of 2 years of meaningful experience conducting quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Minimum of 2 years working collaboratively with Indigenous communities on research projects.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience managing multiple projects and/or multi-site projects, including a demonstrated ability to effectively manage and provide leadership.
  • Demonstrated expertise relating to women’s health, family health, child health, pregnancy social determinants of health.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills with a proven track record of manuscript publication, conference presentations, media activities, etc.
  • Experience with ethics submissions.
  • Experience with the collection, analysis and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative research data.
  • Experience with the development of study protocols and the creation of data bases/data storage infrastructure.
  • Knowledge and experience implementing the Tri-Council Policy Statement – Research Involving the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples of Canada.
  • Knowledge and experience with statistical software such as Atlas.ti, NVivo, STATA, SPSS, and others.
  • Excellent skills in MS Office, database applications, computer networking and internet applications.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a professional and ethical manner in accordance with University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with Indigenous community partners, senior research leaders and investigators.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, accept responsibility and show good judgment.
  • Knowledge of legislation and regulations governing privacy of information and privacy of health information; knowledge and rules for privacy and confidentiality of research data.
  • Experience developing, implementing and managing knowledge translation strategies
