Job description
Environmental Supervisor – Harmac Pacific, a leading pulp and paper mill, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Supervisor to join our team. This unique and critical role will be responsible for managing our environmental programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving continuous improvement in our environmental performance. Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, this role will have a key leadership role in the department and the mill.Key Responsibilities:Environmental Management and Compliance
- Administer mill environmental programs for effluent, air, and landfill permits
- Ensure compliance with government permits and regulations
- Maintain ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and coordinate internal and external audits
- Develop and recommend solutions to environmental problems
- Provide guidance on pollution abatement and environmental control
Reporting and Data Management
- Prepare and submit various environmental reports, including:
- National Pollutant Release Inventory annual report (NPRI)
- Environment Canada and BC Green House Gas annual reports (ECC and BC GHG)
- Monthly, quarterly, and yearly MOE environmental reports
- Chemical Substance List reports for Environment Canada
- Manage monthly energy monitoring and reporting
- Maintain public complaint database and resolve issues
Project Management and Technical Support
- Coordinate Environment Canada Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) studies
- Provide environmental guidance for mill projects
- Offer troubleshooting support for steam plant and pulp mill operations
- Maintain awareness of new analytical techniques and developments in environmental control
Communication and Collaboration
- Present environmental performance, projects, and deficiencies to senior mill staff
- Maintain working relationships with government agencies, other companies, and union representatives
- Communicate with the public and MOE to resolve complaints and concerns
- Participate in daily management meetings along with inter-mill meetings and industry support groups
Safety and Compliance
- Actively participate in the Departmental Safety Program
- Serve as a resource for safety issues related to maintenance work and mill operations
- Update mill procedures to meet legal requirements of the Pulp and Paper Effluent Regulation
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience in environmental management, preferably in pulp and paper or other industry
- In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting processes
- Strong understanding of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
- Excellent data analysis, report writing, and presentation skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and environmental database management
- Experience with greenhouse gas reporting and energy management
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional designation (e.g., P.Eng., EP, CPEA)
- Experience with Effluent Treatment Plant Operation/Controls/Optimization
- Experience/knowledge of Kraft pulp mill operations
- Experience with Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) programs
- Familiarity with air and water quality monitoring equipment and techniques
- Knowledge of WHMIS and chemical management practices
