Duties and Responsibilities BACKGROUND UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank, and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance, and emergency assistance. UNRWA is the largest UN operation in the Middle East with more than 30,000 staff. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The intern will work closely with the subject matter experts in the curriculum unit and report directly to the Education Department’s Communication Advisor. Interns may be assigned matters including but not limited to: • Assist in the creation of self-learning materials by working closely with curriculum advisors on Arabic typing, as well as the design and formatting of self-learning cards. • Design and update educational department content, including brochures, posters, leaflets, and factsheets, to effectively communicate key messages and program information. • Assist in organising and maintaining a repository of design resources and educational materials for ongoing projects. • Support curriculum development activities by preparing documentation, updating files, and assisting in team meetings. • Support the Curriculum team with the translation of Arabic-English texts when needed. • Participate in strategic communication brainstorming, develop meeting minutes, and attend other special events (workshops, trainings). • Help in preparing visually engaging reports, presenting complex information in a clear and accessible format. On completion of the internship, the candidate will have gained: • Excellent knowledge of UNRWA, its mandate, structure, and operation mode. • Valuable experience in Education under a multicultural context, with a particular emphasis on graphic design for educational materials, focusing on creating visuals that enhance learning in emergency contexts. • A deeper understanding of humanitarian assistance, especially in the conflict context. • Writing skills for literature review and communication skills. • Capacities for multitasking and prioritising
Qualifications/special skills
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Education: a) be enrolled in an accredited first-level, higher education programme (Bachelor or equivalent); b) be enrolled in an accredited graduate school programme (Master or higher or equivalent); or c) have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship immediately. The bachelor’s degree (or higher) must be from an accredited educational institution in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or related field. Work Experience: Applicants are not required to have professional work experience, although prior work experience in educational design or in developing learning materials will be an advantage. Strong IT skills, especially the ability to type quickly in Arabic as well as handling images and formatting, are essential. For this position, English and Arabic language proficiency (both written and spoken) is required. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS • Proficient in Arabic typing and well-versed in design tools. • Experience in educational design or a background in developing learning materials is an advantage. • Understanding of the UN System: Familiarity with UN operations, programs, or prior experience within a UN agency or similar international organisation, particularly in education or humanitarian settings, would be a valuable asset. • Strong organisational skills. • Excellent communication skills (different types of texts, comms channels, and audiences). • Creative thinking. COMPETENCIES • Communication: Ability to convey information clearly and effectively in both Arabic and English, both in writing and verbally, facilitating smooth interactions with colleagues and stakeholders from diverse cultural backgrounds. • Typing skills: Ability to type quickly in Arabic (40 – 50 words per minute) • Graphic Design Skills: Familiarity with design software and formatting skills • Creativity: Strong creative thinking skills to generate innovative ideas and visually engaging designs that enhance educational materials and cater to diverse learning needs. • Cultural Awareness: Understanding different cultures, enabling effective collaboration and sensitivity when working with multicultural teams. • Attention to Detail: Strong focus on producing high-quality materials with accuracy in design and content, ensuring all elements meet established standards. • Time Management: Effective prioritisation of tasks and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Languages Languages: Excellent command of spoken and written Arabic, with intermediate proficiency in English.
