The Organization
Plan International is an independent child rights and humanitarian organization committed to children living a life free of poverty, violence and injustice. Plan actively unite children, communities and other people who share our mission to make positive lasting changes in children’s and young people’s lives. Plan support children and youth to gain the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to claim their rights to a fulfilling life, today and in the future.
The Project
With funding from USAID, Plan is joining a coalition led by Mercy Corps, including Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development, Al Jidara and the Solidarity is Global Institute to elevate women’s voices and support progress for women’s rights through the Tawazon — Promoting the Voice and Leadership of Women Activity. Meaning “balance” in Arabic, Tawazon is designed to strengthen legislative framework enforcement and institutional capacity, advance gender equality, strengthen community organizations and support activities that promote women’s rights, leadership and participation in political and public life. This project will be implemented over five years. Champions of Change for Girls’ Rights and Gender Equality is one of Plan International’s strategies for promoting gender equality and social norm change through youth engagement and peer-to-peer mobilization. Its overarching goal is to catalyze a youth-led social movement that challenges social norms and gains society-wide support for gender equality and girls’ rights. Sustainable change in gender norms cannot be achieved if root causes of gender inequality are not addressed as these hinder the realization of children’s rights, particularly for girls. Engagement of all relevant actors, including both girls and boys, in this process is therefore pivotal. Champions of Change has developed a comprehensive curriculum for working with girls and boys. The Champions of Change curricula is Plan International’s innovative and comprehensive methodology for girls’ empowerment and boys’ engagement. The curricula include engaging, adaptable, and adolescent-friendly activities that encourage girls and boys to build their knowledge, attitudes and skills based on their own lived experience and contextual realities.
