Senior Scientific OfficerLocation: Belfast
Length of Assignment: Minimum 6 months (possible extension)
Pay: £21.95 per hour (Paid Weekly)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM
Start Date: February 2025Job Overview:Scientific evidence plays a crucial role in addressing climate change and developing solutions to achieve net zero targets. The Senior Scientific Officer will provide expert advice on climate change science, supporting both policy and operational matters.
- Provide expert scientific advice to DAERA senior managers and policy officials on climate change issues and priorities.
- Represents DAERA on scientific matters, liaising with government departments, Devolved Administrations, and academic experts.
- Work with the Climate Thematic Board, Science Oversight Group, and R&D Committee to ensure research priorities have a strong scientific foundation.
- Quality assure scientific research and evidence gathering activities commissioned by DAERA.
- Support the development of the Climate Action Plan.
- Contribute to the broader work of DAERA’s Chief Scientific Adviser’s Office.
Essential Criteria:Qualifications:Applicants must have:
- A 2:1 Honours Degree in a scientific discipline relevant to DAERA’s work (e.g., Agriculture Science, Animal Health and Welfare, Food Science, Rural Affairs).
- At least 2 years of post-qualification experience (within the past 8 years) advising senior managers or external stakeholders on science-based issues for research commissioning and/or policy development.
- Success in a science-based organisation within the last 5 years, with experience in managing or undertaking science-based projects.
- Recognised standing within their scientific field, demonstrated through publications, professional accreditations, or other research outputs.
Post-qualification experience can include postgraduate or postdoctoral research.
Science-based issues include research, testing, analysis, or the provision of scientific advice and information.
A science-based organisation is one where the primary function involves research, testing, or scientific advisory services.Experience & Skills:
- Horizon scanning for emerging scientific developments and communicating findings to senior officials.
- Strong analytical and research skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Experience in managing multiple priorities across various work areas.
- Ability to present and influence within DAERA and external partnerships.
- Previous experience in science, science policy, or policy impact roles.
- Line management experience.
