School of Psychology and the School of Social SciencesWe are seeking to appoint a Research Associate, to work within the schools of Psychology and of Social Sciences.The postholder will contribute to a substantive, problem-focused social sciences programme of research investigating the local social, cultural and community impacts, ethical and social acceptability, and upstream responsible innovation implications of carbon removal with enhanced rock weathering.The successful candidate will require a postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area (e.g. geographies of sustainability with multi-modal and visual methodologies) or equivalent or relevant industrial experience and a portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within Cultural and community impacts of place-based proposals for carbon removal technologies and Analysing and reporting research using at least one of the following qualitative methods: community case-study, participatory, psychosocial, multi-modal visual, or deliberative social sciences research methods, and an understanding of issues associated with the role of new technologies in meeting the UK’s net zero climate targets.For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Nick Pidgeon [email protected]This post is part time (21 hours per week), is fixed term until 28 February 2026, available from 1 March 2025 and is based in the Cathays Park site.The majority of roles at Cardiff University are currently operating under “blended working” arrangements, with staff having the flexibility to work partly from home and partly from the University campus depending on specific business requirements. Discussions around these arrangements can take place after the successful candidate has been appointed.Salary: £40,247 – £45,163 per annum, pro-rata (Grade 6).

To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesResearch

  • To conduct research within the field of social and community impacts of enhanced rock weathering and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national and international academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
  • To attend and or present at conferences/seminars at a local, national and international level as required
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
  • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field
  • To participate in School research activities.
  • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of the BBSRC Enhanced Rock Weathering Greenhouse Gas Removals Demonstrator project and the Leverhulme Centre for Climate Change Mitigation project goals, including in academic publications and conferences.

Specific Duties

  • To conduct original data analysis and interpretation on agreed objectives on the community impacts of enhanced rock weathering in agricultural locations across Wales and England.
  • To develop original data analytic techniques and insights, in particular through applying visual qualitative data analysis techniques, to understand community views and to agree the research strategies and data analytic activities that you will develop with colleagues.

Other

  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the Schools’ profiles, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the Schools and the enhancement of their regional and national profile.
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the Schools and their work to the wider University and the outside world
  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.
