Our core purpose is Building People, Projects, and Communities; our core values are Integrity, Partnership, and Empowerment.POSITION SUMMARY:The Payroll Specialist is an integral role in the organization. This individual will be responsible for processing weekly payroll for both union and non-union team members, they will be responsible for onboarding and offboarding and updating the payroll system to reflect any payroll related change. This position will be the key contact for Project Delivery team members to assist with interpreting and understanding collective agreements, employment agreements, and ensuring the organization is adhering to legal standards pertaining to payroll legislation.PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Processing payroll on a weekly basis for both union and non-union employees
- Developing reports of company earnings, taxes, deductions, and non-taxable wages
- Preparing year-end and employee tax slips or forms, and submitting government filings to meet deadlines
- Maintaining confidential information by adhering to legal and ethical standards
- Working with cross-functional departments to ensure employee wages are allocated to the appropriate projects
- Responsible for onboarding both union and non-union employees into the payroll system
- Responsible for maintaining and updating the payroll system to reflect employee changes, such as, wage increases, tax changes, taxable benefit changes, subsistence and travel payments, addresses and banking information, etc.
- Processes employee offboards in the payroll system and prepares ROE’s.
- Completes union remittances monthly
- Updates the payroll system to reflect union wages as per the collective agreements
- Understands and provides clarity to Managers regarding the collective agreements
- Staying up to date with payroll legislation, tax laws, and taxable benefits.
- Supporting with internal and external audits.
- Identify opportunities to improve the payroll process and workflow.
- Other duties as required
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years’ relevant experience in an equivalent payroll related position
- Payroll designation is a requirement. Payroll certification (PCP or CPM) is an asset.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is an asset.
- Previous experience in a unionized construction environment
- Strong understanding of collective agreements
- Strong financial management acumen: advanced knowledge of accounting procedures and protocols, budget administration, financial forecasting, analysis, and reporting
- Experience with multi-province payroll and labour laws.
- Familiarity with project-based travel and wage policies.
- Proven high degree of accuracy, effective time management, strong organizational skills
- Relevant understanding of construction management principles and processes
- Strong skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Strong skills in Box, Jonas Construction, SAP or other ERP experience are an asset
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize activities and work under pressure.
- Results-oriented and ability to take initiative
