This role is ideal for a mid-career researcher passionate about advancing systematic botany research and contributing to the legacy of the National Herbarium of NSW.
The role
As the Leader Systematic Botany, you will spearhead research programs and oversee the scientific curation of the National Herbarium of NSW, ensuring the botanical collections are accurately identified and that names and classifications follow current accepted standards. You’ll collaborate with a diverse team of scientists, Early-Career Researchers, and technical staff within the Plant Discovery and Evolution Research team to deliver impactful research outcomes and drive stewardship of the herbarium’s 1.4 million specimens.This role involves managing a team of four independent researchers (three Systematic Botanists and a Bryophyte Systematist), supporting their growth while advancing your own research program in systematic botany. Based at the state-of-the-art National Herbarium of NSW at Mount Annan, you will work closely with colleagues to maintain world-class collections and contribute to understanding Australia’s unique flora.This role would be ideal for a mid-career researcher (e.g., with 10+ years of experience post-PhD) interested in building leadership and management skills, while continuing to develop an independent research program in systematic botany.   • Specialized Expertise: Extensive knowledge of systematic botany, plant taxonomy, and Australian flora, with experience in herbarium curation, plant identification, and record-keeping practices.
  • Research Proficiency: Skilled in research techniques such as specimen collection, microscopy, phylogenomics, and data interpretation using botanical databases.
  • Academic Excellence: Tertiary qualifications (PhD) in Biological or Botanical Science would be highly regarded, with a strong publication track record in systematic botany.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Experience supervising or mentoring scientists or staff, with a collaborative and self-directed approach to leadership.

What is an essential requirement:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Biological and/or Botanical Science
  • Current driver’s license with the ability to operate manual vehicles.
