IT Systems Engineer (Linux/DR-BCP) in Virtual, Illinois

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated IT Systems Engineer who has with solid experience in Linux Administration including Disaster Recovery (DR) and Business Continuity Planning (BCP) experience. This position will play a key role in managing and optimizing our Linux-based infrastructure, ensuring data protection, and supporting the organization’s business continuity initiatives. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing, configuring, and troubleshooting Linux-based servers, and leverage automation where appropriate. Additionally, the candidate will be a lead backup administrator who will be responsible for managing and optimizing our Rubrik environment.

What You’ll Do:

  • System Installation & Configuration : Install, configure, and maintain Linux operating systems, ensuring optimal system performance all while keeping security at front of mind.

  • System Monitoring & Performance Tuning : Monitor system health, troubleshoot performance issues, and implement optimizations to ensure efficient operation.

  • Security & Patch Management : Implement security best practices, including user management, firewall configuration, and software patching to protect systems from vulnerabilities.

  • Automation & Scripting : Create and maintain shell scripts or automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, or Chef) for system management and administration tasks.

  • User & Group Management : Administer user accounts, groups, and permissions to ensure proper access control and security.

  • Networking & Connectivity : Configure and maintain networking services (DNS, DHCP, NFS, Samba, etc.) and troubleshoot network-related issues.

  • Log Management : Analyze system logs to identify and resolve issues proactively, ensuring system stability and reliability.

  • Support & Troubleshooting : Provide troubleshooting and support for application issues, including kernel panics, hardware failures, and networking issues.

  • Documentation : Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.

  • Collaboration : Work closely with other IT teams (e.g., Development, Networking, Security) to ensure smooth operations and resolve cross-functional issues.

  • Backup & Disaster Recovery : Develop, maintain, and test backup and disaster recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability.

  • Rubrik Backup Management : Ensure proper backup scheduling, SLA tiers, and successful recovery processes.

  • Disaster Recovery (DR) Planning : Assist in supporting the testing of disaster recovery procedures, ensuring business continuity in the event of a system failure or disaster.

  • Business Continuity Planning (BCP) : Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish and execute business continuity plans, ensuring minimal downtime and quick recovery in case of failure.

  • Backup & Restore Operations : Regularly perform data restoration tests and optimize backup processes for both efficiency and reliability.

  • Monitoring & Reporting : Monitor backup health, system performance, and provide regular reporting on key backup and DR metrics.

  • Documentation : Maintain comprehensive documentation on backup procedures, disaster recovery processes, and system configurations.

What You’ll Need to Have for the Role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 3+ years of experience as a Linux Administrator, with a focus on backups, disaster recovery, and business continuity.

  • Linux Administration : Extensive experience with Linux distributions (e.g., RHEL, CentOS, Oracle Linux), including system setup, configuration, patching, and troubleshooting.

  • Security : Experience in securing Linux systems and backups, including encryption and access controls.

  • Backup Technology Expertise : Experience with Rubrik backup solutions, including deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting of Rubrik appliances and software.

  • Familiarity with backup and restore processes, including both local and cloud-based backup systems.

  • DR/BCP Experience: Experience with formal DR/BCP practices and process development, with a focus on IT processes, process updates and testing.

  • Cloud Backup Solutions : Familiarity with cloud-based backup solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure) and integration with Rubrik or other backup platforms.

  • Problem-Solving : Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, particularly related to backup failures, data restoration issues, and Linux server outages.

Pay Range:

$103,200.00-$154,800.00 Annual
