Our Chalk River site is looking for a Safety Review Committee Manager to plan and perform independent technical reviews of company activities related to its licensed nuclear facilities.   • Reviewing plans and independent technical reviews, accepting hazard categories following the review of proposals by Proponents.
  • Liaising with the NCS Panel Chair and the NCS Panel Technical Secretary, chairing Safety Review Committee (SRC) independent technical review meetings, and ensuring that final review comments that are compiled from technical reviewers.
  • Providing oversight to ensure that reviews are performed by subject-matter experts who are independent of the Proponent’s organization.
  • Managing the work of and leading technical specialists within the Branch, and internal and external to CNL (as required) to ensure that requests for independent technical review of technical documentation submitted by Proponents, or requests by Proponents for an independent review of activities at nuclear facilities at CNL sites, are accommodated and dispositioned effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintaining and fostering working relationships with Proponents at CNL sites to allow open communications with them, yet maintaining an arms-length relationship and professionalism to assure that technical reviews remain independent and objective with safety being treated as paramount.
  • Working with the Senior Director, Compliance in planning and executing activities to a budget that allows for effective and efficient independent technical reviews to achieve the mandate of the SRC, while meeting associated targets and the requirements to fully support the complement of CNL and external personnel required to perform independent technical reviews to the appropriate depth and breadth.
  • Communicating with a diverse audience to understand their requirements, support them effectively through independent technical reviews, and add value where possible is required.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • A minimum of an Honours Bachelor of Science in Engineering or sciences directly associated with the nuclear sciences, nuclear support programs or nuclear operations, plus 10 years of experience that includes working in a technical leadership role in a nuclear setting or
  • Master of Science or PhD in Engineering or sciences directly associated with the nuclear sciences, nuclear support programs or nuclear operations, plus 7 years experience in a technical leadership role in a nuclear setting.
  • Experience
  • Seasoned managerial experience or a proven track record of progressive leadership, complemented by strong planning, technical, problem-solving, and analytical capabilities, is essential for this position.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of nuclear safety analysis techniques and methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of technical nuclear-related programs and operations associated with nuclear reactors, other nuclear facilities and non-nuclear facilities.
  • Technical and operational knowledge encompassing such nuclear sites’ technology and operational aspects.
  • Demonstrated operational experience within a licensed nuclear facility or demonstrated experience in supporting the activities of licensed nuclear facilities is an asset.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Office environment with periodic visits to CNL facilities and sites, some of such visits will be to secure areas in radiological zones.
  • Travel to locations other than CNL sites to interface with external regulators may be required, as needed.
