We are expanding our ecology team and looking for an experienced seasonal Senior
Ecologist
to support a range of large-scale infrastructure and development projects across Scotland and the
UK.

This 6-month, fixed-term contract offers an exciting opportunity to play a key
role in delivering impactful ecological work, with the potential for a full time permanent contract, based on project
demand. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervision & Coordination: Oversee field ecologists conducting **Phase 1
    Habitat Surveys and protected species assessments.
  • Compliance & Best Practice: Ensure all surveys adhere to **CIEEM
    guidelines**, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) principles, and
    regulatory requirements.
  • Health & Safety Oversight: Implement and enforce biosecurity and site
    safety measures, particularly in sensitive habitats.
  • Data Collection & Quality Assurance: Review survey data to ensure accuracy
    and consistency before submission.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Act as the primary field contact for landowners,
    contractors and project managers.
  • Problem Solving: Identify and address any site-specific ecological challenges
    that arise during fieldwork.
  • Reporting: Contribute to interim and final ecological reports, providing
    professional assessments and mitigation recommendations.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in field-based ecological surveying, including *Phase 1 Habitat
    Surveys and protected species assessments.
  • CIEEM membership (Full or Associate).
  • Experience supervising field teams and coordinating ecological surveys.
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping and ecological data analysis.
  • Excellent understanding of UK environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks (e.g.,
    Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Habitats Regulations 2017).
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting and stakeholder
    engagement.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel/stay near survey locations.

Desirable Skills

  • Hold one or more protected species licences* (e.g., bats, great crested newts, otters).
  • Experience with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessment methodologies.
  • Familiarity with large-scale infrastructure projects (e.g., energy transmission).
  • LANTRA 4×4 Offroad Training Qualification

Working Conditions

  • Fieldwork in remote and challenging terrain across the north of Scotland and the Highlands.
  • Long working hours may be required to align with survey schedules and daylight
    availability.

  • PPE and survey equipment supplied.
