Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration. The incumbent reports to the General Foreperson of the MAU.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the General Foreperson of the Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: Management of the Carpet and Upholstery Shop and its staff: – Reviews work orders received through iNeed and assign work to appropriate staff members. – Inspects work performed by staff members to ensure proper quality. – Coordinates scheduled annual leave for staff. – Manages material and supply inventory for Carpet and Upholstery shops. – Provides estimates for completion of carpeting, flooring, blinds, drapery, and upholstery projects. – Responsible for shop safety and ensures work is performed by staff in a safe manner. – Conduct performance reviews of staff members. – Responsible for developing, mentoring, and training more junior staff members. – Assesses the general condition of Carpeting, Drapery, Blinds and Upholstery throughout UNHQ and makes recommendations regarding scheduled replacement of large expenditure items and proactively schedules minor repairs. Management of Associated Contractors: – Provides input for development of budgets for service contracts for Carpeting replacement and Drapery Installation and Maintenance. – Provides inputs for purchase of Upholstery supplies and for tools, equipment, and supplies utilized by in-house staff. Recycling and Shredding Services: – Reviews work orders for delivery and pick-up of “blue-bins” for Safe and Secure Disposal of documents by various UN Departments and coordinates work with the Custodial Vendor. – Schedules and coordinates the destruction of collected documents with paper shredding vendor. – Maintains documentation that pertains to document destruction and issues Certificates of Destruction to requesting entities. – Assists General Foreperson in coordinating and monitoring removal of trash, cardboard, single stream recycling, and construction and demolition (C&D) waste container and compactors. – Schedules vehicle access for security clearance. – Provides desk side trash receptacles when necessary and maintains inventory. – Perform other duties as necessary.

Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of experience in Carpeting, Upholstery, or a related construction trade is required. Experience as a team lead supervisor is required. Experience in a supervisory capacity as a foreperson, manager or business owner is desirable. Experience in the carpeting trade, including installation of broadloom, carpet tiles, and ¾ with carpets is desirable. Experience in the Upholstery trade, including furniture restoration, sewing skills, and detailed knowledge of various fabrics is desirable. Experience in the management of third-party contractors is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
