Job title:

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Plasma Astrophysics

Company

University of Oxford

Job description

We are looking for an outstanding early career researcher interested in working in plasma astrophysics, with emphasis on the physics of (one or more of) galaxy clusters, non-thermal/relativistic/radiating plasmas, observable collisionless or near-collisionless plasmas including plasmas measurable in situ in the heliosphere, plasmas arising in “laboratory astrophysics” experiments. Outstanding candidates interested in fundamental plasma physics problems arising in the context of magnetic- and inertial-confinement fusion will also be considered. The successful candidate will have a high degree of autonomy and therefore is expected to show evidence of ability to conduct an independent research programme. Their research may be theoretical, numerical, or data-driven, or, ideally, a combination of the above. They will be part of an interdisciplinary plasma theory group comprising researchers interested both in plasma astrophysics and plasma physics applied to magnetic- and inertial-confinement fusion; a broad range of interests and openness to new research directions will be a welcome trait. The post-holder may be expected to help in the supervision of DPhil and master-level students, as well as undergraduate interns. The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach. This may include lecturing, small group teaching, and tutoring of undergraduates and graduate students.Applicants should hold (or be close to completion) a PhD in Physics or a related field. A strong experience in theoretical particle physics and data driven research would be essential as well as strong communications and written skills. Please direct enquiries about the role to Professor Alexander Schekochihin [email protected]The post is full time and fixed term for 2 years with possibility of extension. The closing date for applications is noon UK time on Friday, 4 April 2025.You will be required to upload a CV and Supporting Statement as part of your online application. The Supporting Statement should include a cover letter and should also clearly describe how you meet each of the selection criteria listed in the job description. You will also be asked to provide details of at least two, and ideally three, referees. You should arrange for your referees to submit all references to PT References [email protected] before the deadline.Contact Person :Recruitment TeamVacancy ID :178594Contact Phone :Closing Date & Time :04-Apr-2025 12:00Pay Scale :RESEARCH GRADE 7Contact Email :[email protected]Salary (£) :Grade 7: £ 38,674 – £ 46,913 per annum
