Job title:

Research Associate in Fibre Spinning

Company

University of Manchester

Job description

The Department of Materials wishes to appoint a Research Associate to join the Bio-Active Materials Group of Professor Jonny Blaker in the Department of Materials, School of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, The University of Manchester to work on spinning recombinant silk fibres as part of the SPINS project. The Synthetic Biology Pipeline for the Investigation of Novel Spidroins (SPINS) project is funded via the EPSRC and the post will be based at The University of Manchester in the Henry Royce Institute. You will work on the microfluidic spinning of novel recombinant spidroins, and interact with three other research associates; two based at The University of Manchester focussed on the design and expression of novel chimeric mini-spidroins, and one based at The University of Sheffield developing high throughput viscosity and spinnability screening methods. The overarching aim of SPINS is to establish an engineering pipeline for the design, heterologous expression and testing of novel chimeric mini-spidroins. This will enable access to a much larger range of new engineered spider silks with predictable spinning properties, expanding the possible application of these versatile materials and facilitating future innovations across a range of engineering and biotechnological disciplines. You will be a conscientious, innovative experimental scientist who holds a PhD in Materials, Chemistry, Engineering or a closely related discipline. Experience in formulation and specialist knowledge in spinning fibres and their characterisation is essential. This specific position will focus on the development of microfluidic wet-spinning approaches for the identification, and optimisation of spinning conditions for novel spidroins, methods for high through-put screening and fibre characterisation. The project will involve working all researchers appointed to this project. What you will get in return:
