The objective of this Individual Contractor (IC) assignment is to provide legal analysis and related research support to the overall work on the projects of the team, with a focus on the upcoming Oman XB project. The legal assistant will support the project lead in the preparation of technical material such as reviewing country profiles, performing desk research, conducting analysis & writing reports, training material and content (for web portals, forum and webinars).

Duties and Responsibilities
The Individual Contractor will support the legal research and analysis contributing to the deliverables of the team, mainly the updates on the Arab Business Environment Legislative Framework Report and the Arab Legislative Portal, mandated under the Cluster 6 program on Enhancing Competition and Consumer Protection Policy and Law in the Arab region. The IC will also support the legal research and analysis work for the XB project on Assessing the Building Material Market for Oman. The Individual Contractor will support the legal research and analysis contributing to the deliverables of the team, mainly the updates on the Arab Business Environment Legislative Framework Report and the Arab Legislative Portal, mandated under the Cluster 6 program on Enhancing Competition and Consumer Protection Policy and Law in the Arab region. The IC will also support the legal research and analysis work for the XB project on Assessing the Building Material Market for Oman. Duties and Responsibilities: • Conduct research on assigned topics, using existing legal files and alternative sources. • Provide general project support services through processing drafts, editing, proofreading a variety of documents, preparing presentations and reports that contain a legal aspect. • Assist in revising and updating the country profiles and chapters of the Arab Business Legislations Framework (ABLF). • Research legal data and update the Arab Legislations Portal (ALP) as needed. • Assist in the evaluation and examination of data sets and information for accuracy, clarity and validity. • Support the preparation of a variety of reports, analysis, charts, and training material related to the Oman XB project. • Assist in the maintenance and update of a body of legal electronic reference files to ensure rapid retrieval of critical information. • Assist in the preparations of the 6th Arab Competition Forum in Baghdad. • Undertake related tasks on ad hoc assignments as requested by supervisor.
Qualifications/special skills
A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Business Law, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree in these areas is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of experience in legal analysis, research and data collection is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
