Job description

About usPrimary Supervisor: Professor Amitava BanerjeeSecondary Supervisor: Professor Naaheed MukadamApplications are invited for a PhD studentship fully-funded through an Alzheimer’s Research UK grant for 4 years. The studentship will commence from September 2025 onwards in the UCL Institute of Health Informatics, under the supervision of Professor Amitava Banerjee, Professor in Clinical Data Science and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist and Professor Naaheed Mukadam, Professor in Psychiatry and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist.About the roleProject Background:Cardiovascular diseases are common and increase risk of dementia in later life. Together, dementia and cardiovascular disease present major burden on individuals and societies in the UK and globally, but the overlap is understudied. Better understanding of cardiovascular diseases before dementia diagnosis may lead to new knowledge about disease mechanisms and early prevention of dementia through improved treatment of cardiovascular disease.Research Aims:The studentship aims to investigate associations between CVD and dementia to better define, predict and prevent dementia in nationally representative electronic health records (EHR).Using UK national electronic health records, the PhD candidate will study two groups of individuals over a 15-20 year period: newly diagnosed dementia and newly diagnosed cardiovascular diseases. In the first group, the risk of cardiovascular disease and the effect on hospital admission and death will be studied. In the second group, the postholder will look at the risk of new dementia and how this affects hospital admission and mortality. The postholder will be expected to use traditional statistical methods as well as advanced data analysis, such as machine learning. The scale of the study population allows us to study cardiovascular disease and dementia, both overall and as individual types of disease (e.g. heart attacks, and Alzheimer’s or vascular dementia). At population level, we will model potential impact of prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases on dementia.About youWe invite applicants who have or expect to obtain a 1st or upper 2nd class Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in epidemiology, biostatistics, health informatics, data science or related disciplines.Applications are invited from UK citizens who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the 3 years immediately preceding the start of the programme.
